In addition, knowledge of accentuation and stress also helps us to better understand the rules of word formation and the structure of our language. Therefore, this project will be a great opportunity to deepen our knowledge and explore this area of our language in a practical and fun way.

Word Accentuation

Word accentuation is one of the most important characteristics of our language. It helps us to understand how to pronounce words correctly and, sometimes, the difference between the meaning of two words can only be in the accentuation. For example, we have "ele" and "éle" - do you know what they mean?

Word Stress

On the other hand, word stress refers to the force with which we pronounce the syllables of a word. Some syllables, called stressed syllables, are pronounced with more force, while others, called unstressed syllables, are pronounced with less force. This can also change the meaning of words. For example, the word "pelo" can have different meanings depending on the stress: pêlo (of the animal) or pelo (preposition).

Mastering the accentuation and stress of words is essential for us to communicate effectively. Just imagine trying to read a text and not knowing where to accentuate or how to pronounce the words correctly? It would be quite complicated, wouldn't it?

Practical Activity: "The Accented and Stressed Words Challenge"

Project Objective

The aim of this project is to deepen the knowledge on word accentuation and stress, as well as develop the skills of teamwork, creativity, and communication.

Project Description

Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5, will create an interactive board game called "The Accented and Stressed Words Challenge". The game will focus on word accentuation and stress, encouraging players to enhance their knowledge.

Required Materials

• A large sheet of cardboard to be the game board (several A4 sheets can be joined together)
• Colorful pens
• Dice
• Pieces for each player (buttons, caps, stones, etc.)
• Cards with accented and non-accented words, and stressed and unstressed words (these cards can be made on sheets of paper)

Step by Step

1. Group Organization: The teacher will organize the students into groups of 3 to 5.

2. Explanation of the Game: The teacher will explain the rules of the game to the students in detail. It is important that everyone understands the objective of the game and how to play it. (The teacher can use the example below to help with the explanation)

3. Game Board Creation: Each group will draw a game board on the large cardboard, dividing it into squares. At the beginning of the board, draw an arrow indicating the direction of the path. At the end, draw a "Victory House".

4. Card Creation: The students, in groups, should create the game cards. Half of the cards should contain accented and non-accented words, and the other half should contain stressed and unstressed words. The cards should be colorful and cheerful.

5. Rule Definition: Together, the students should define the rules of the game. How will the cards be used? What happens when a player lands on a square? How do you win the game? It is important that everyone in the group has a voice and participates in defining the rules.

6. Game Testing: The group should test the game to see if the rules are clear and if the game is working correctly. If necessary, adjustments can be made to the rules or to the game.

7. Presentation Preparation: Each group should prepare a short presentation about the game: how it works, what players will learn by playing it, etc.

8. Game Presentation: Each group will present their game to the class. Afterwards, all students will have the chance to play the other groups' games and learn more about word accentuation and stress.

9. Post-Game Discussion: After the presentation and the experience of playing the other groups' games, there will be a classroom discussion to share the learnings, doubts, and reflections.

If you land on a square with a question, you must pick up a card, read the word, and say whether or not it is accented, or whether it is stressed or unstressed. If you get it right, you can advance on the board. If you get it wrong, you must stay on the same square and lose your turn.

The aim of the game is to be the first to reach the "Victory House" at the end of the board. But be careful, if you land on a square with a challenge, you may have to go back a few squares or even lose your turn! So, pay attention to the words and good luck!
