Reading and understanding the text are fundamental skills that we use in all school subjects and even outside of school, in our daily lives. When reading a text, we are not just deciphering words, but also trying to understand what the author is trying to tell us. And that is the key point of text comprehension: it's not just about reading itself, but about understanding what we read.

Introduction

To understand a text, we need several skills. One of them is decoding, which is the ability to turn letters into sounds and syllables into words. Another important skill is fluency, which is the ability to read quickly, accurately, and with proper intonation. In addition, vocabulary is essential because we need to know the meaning of words to understand the text.

But text comprehension goes beyond these skills. We also need prior knowledge - the information we already have about the subject of the text - and reading strategies - the techniques we use to understand the text. For example, we can ask ourselves questions while reading, or we can make connections between the text and our personal experiences.

In this project, we will explore all these skills. You will work in groups to read, discuss, and understand different types of texts. We will also practice using the dictionary, formulating questions about the text, identifying main and secondary information, and much more. Are you ready for the adventure? Let's go!

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "The Island of Mysterious Books"

Project Objective:

This project aims to develop in the classes the skill of reading and text comprehension, as well as promoting teamwork, time management, creativity, and proactivity. The final goal is the creation of a "Magic Book", which will result from reading and understanding different texts.

Project Description:

The students, divided into groups of 3 to 5 participants, will embark on the adventure "The Island of Mysterious Books". Each group will receive a collection of books, each with a different story. The challenge is to read the stories, discuss as a group, and, in the end, create a "Magic Book" that will tell a summary of the main stories read.

Necessary Materials:

1. Collection of books (can be selected by the teacher or chosen by the students from the books available in the classroom or library);
2. Bond paper, colored pencils, markers, glue, scissors, magazines or newspapers for cutting;
3. Tape;
4. Computer with internet access (for online dictionary consultation, if necessary).

Step by Step:

1. Group Formation and Book Distribution: Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group will receive a collection of books.

2. Reading the Books and Group Discussion: The groups will read the books together. It is important that all group members participate in reading and discussion. During reading, students should pay attention to the details of the story, the characters, the location where the story takes place, and so on.

3. Creation of the "Magic Book": After reading and discussing, the groups will create their "Magic Book". For this, each group must select a story to be the main theme of their book. Then, students should write a summary of this story on bond paper. They can use drawings, magazine cutouts, stickers, etc., to illustrate the summary. Remember that the summary should be clear and objective, and should only include the main events of the story.

4. Presentation of the "Magic Book": At the end of the project, each group will present their "Magic Book" to the class. During the presentation, students should explain the chosen story, show the illustrations, and answer any questions from their classmates.
