Verbs are an essential part of our language, as they indicate the action, state, fact, or phenomenon that occurs in time. Without verbs, our communication would be extremely limited. Imagine trying to tell a story without using any verbs! That's why it's crucial that all of us, Portuguese language students, master this important class of words.

In our daily lives, we use a multitude of verbs to express our actions and feelings. When we wake up, get up, have breakfast, go to school, play, talk, eat, study... We are constantly using verbs to describe what we do. But have you ever stopped to think about how these words work? How do they fit into a sentence? How can we conjugate verbs correctly?

Introduction

Verbs are words that indicate actions, states, phenomena, or events. They allow us to express what we do, how we feel, what happens around us, and what will happen.

In the Portuguese language, verbs are formed by a root (which is the base of the verb) and an ending, which can vary according to tense, mood, number, and person. For example, the verb 'cantar' (to sing) has the root 'cant-' and the ending '-ar'. When we use this verb in the present tense, in the first person singular, we say 'eu canto' (I sing). In the past tense, in the third person plural, we say 'eles cantaram' (they sang).

Verbs are also divided into three conjugations, according to the ending of the first person singular in the present indicative. The first conjugation is formed by verbs ending in '-ar', like 'cantar'. The second conjugation is formed by verbs ending in '-er', like 'correr' (to run). And the third conjugation is formed by verbs ending in '-ir', like 'partir' (to leave).

Activity Title: 'The Verb Journey'

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to deepen students' knowledge about verbs, their identification, conjugation, and use in different verb tenses and moods. Additionally, the project aims to develop socio-emotional skills such as collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving.

Detailed Project Description

Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, will be challenged to create a 'Verb Memory Game'. Each group will be responsible for selecting 20 verbs, writing them on cards, and creating a game where it is necessary to match the action represented by the verb with its respective word.

Required Materials

• Cardboard or cardstock
• Colored pens
• Scissors
• Glue
• Dictionary (optional)

Step by Step

1. Group Formation: Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students. Each group will be a team on the verb journey.

2. Verb Selection: Each group should select 20 verbs. The verbs can be chosen from a list provided by the teacher, from the dictionary, or from the students' own knowledge.

3. Preparing the Cards: On cardboards or cardstock, students should write one verb on each card. The idea is to have 20 cards with 20 different verbs. Each verb should be written on two cards, totaling 40 cards.

4. Decorating the Cards: Students can decorate the cards as they wish, as long as each verb is written legibly.

5. Creating the Game: With the cards ready, students should create the game rules. The idea is to have a memory game, where the player needs to find the two cards with the same verb. However, to ensure that students are practicing the correct use of verbs, instead of simply matching the images, they should match the action represented by the verb with the written word.

6. Game Presentation: Each group should present the game to the class, explaining the rules and the objective of the game.

7. In-Class Game: After all presentations, the games will be made available for the class to play. During the game, students should discuss the actions represented by the verbs and how they relate to the written word.

8. Final Report: At the end of the project, each student should write a brief report describing what they learned about verbs during the journey and how the experience of working in a group was.

Delivery Format

The memory game and the final report should be submitted to the teacher. The report can be handwritten or typed and printed, but it must be individual, meaning each student must submit their own report.
