Primitive and Derived Verbs

Contextualization

Introduction and theory

Let's start our journey exploring primitive and derived words. Without realizing it, we use them every day! Primitive words are those that give rise to other words and do not come from any word in Portuguese. For example, the word 'pedra' (stone) is a primitive word. Derived words, on the other hand, are those that are formed from other words, such as 'pedreira' (quarry), which derives from 'pedra'.

There is also a specific type of derived words called compound words. They are formed by the union of two or more words. For example, the word 'passatempo' (pastime) is a compound word, as it is formed by the combination of 'passa' and 'tempo' (time).

Furthermore, words can be derived from others by adding prefixes (at the beginning of the word) or suffixes (at the end of the word). To exemplify, we can take the word 'feliz' (happy) and add the suffix '-mente' to form 'felizmente' (happily).

Contextualization and importance of the theme

Now you must be wondering, why do we need to learn about primitive and derived words, right? Well, understanding how words are formed not only helps us expand our vocabulary but also better comprehend the structure of our language. This can make us better readers, writers, and communicators.

In the real world, professionals such as writers, journalists, advertisers, and poets use their knowledge of primitive and derived words to create richer and more interesting texts. Additionally, in many professions, understanding derived words can help in comprehending technical terms. For example, a doctor can better understand a patient's condition by knowing the origin of the words used for diagnosis.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: 'Words at Play: Building and Discovering Primitives and Derivatives'

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to allow students to apply their knowledge of primitive words, derived words, compound words, and those formed by adding prefixes and suffixes in a practical and playful way. In addition to developing their communication skills, teamwork, time management, and creative thinking.

Detailed Project Description

In this game, groups will have to build a word tree! The activity consists of choosing a primitive word and, from it, unfolding derived words, compound words, and those formed by adding prefixes and suffixes. The primitive word will be the root of the tree and its derivations will be the branches and leaves. During the project, students should research, discuss, plan, and execute the activity collaboratively.

Required Materials

  • Flip chart paper or kraft paper.
  • Colorful marker pens.
  • Post-its.
  • Research material (books, internet, etc.).

Step-by-Step Guide for Activity Execution

  1. Form groups of three to five students and choose a primitive word to be the root of the tree.

  2. On the flip chart paper or kraft paper, draw a tree and write the chosen primitive word on the trunk.

  3. Research derived words, compound words, and those formed by prefixes and suffixes from the primitive word.

  4. Write each derived/compound word formed on a Post-it and stick them on the branches of the tree, according to the type of formation: suffix-derived, prefix-derived, compound, etc.

  5. Repeat the process until completing the tree with the number of words defined by the teacher.

  6. After completing the tree, the group should present the results to the class explaining the origin of each word and why they were classified in that way.

Project Deliverables and Work Documentation

After completing the activity, each group should prepare a detailed report on the work done. This report will consist of:

  1. Introduction: Where the student must present the chosen primitive word and explain its relevance and application in the real world, as well as the project's objective.

  2. Development: In this stage, the student must present the theory on primitive, derived, and compound words, derived by adding prefixes and suffixes, explain in detail the activity carried out, the criteria used to choose the derived/compound words, and discuss the results obtained.

  3. Conclusions: Here the student must indicate the learnings obtained and make a self-analysis on the positive and negative points of the project, highlighting the challenges encountered and how they were solved.

  4. Bibliography: Finally, the student must indicate the research sources used during the project, such as books, web pages, and videos, among others.

The report must be submitted one week after the activity, which will give students enough time to process the lived experience and document it properly.

Remember: although it is a group work, everyone should participate in all stages, from research to the preparation of the report, to ensure the acquisition and consolidation of the proposed knowledge and skills.
