Contextualization
Art has been a fundamental form of human expression since the dawn of human existence, providing a means to communicate feelings, ideas, and narratives. Artistic expressions range from cave paintings to modern digital art. Drawing, in particular, is a powerful form of art that has been used throughout history as a means of visual communication.
Drawing is not only a way to create art but also an important tool to enhance observation, memory, and motor coordination. When we draw, we are essentially translating the three-dimensional world we see into a two-dimensional representation. This process involves a series of cognitive and creative skills that are useful not only in arts but also in various other disciplines.
The act of drawing helps improve concentration, stimulates creative thinking, facilitates emotional expression, and promotes a better understanding of the world around us. Furthermore, drawing has been used as a therapeutic tool and a way to explore and understand personal experiences.
Artistic expression through drawing has considerable relevance in our current world. In the digital technology era, where visual communication plays a significant role in our daily lives, drawing becomes an increasingly valued skill. Additionally, with growing concerns about mental health in contemporary society, drawing can also be an effective form of self-therapy.
Art is often used as a form of social and political commentary, allowing people to express their opinions and ideals in a creative and non-verbal way. Developing drawing skills can equip students with the ability to express themselves more effectively and contribute to ongoing sociocultural discussions.

Practical Activity
Activity Title: "Building Our Own Comic Book Story"
Project Objective:
This project aims to allow students to explore artistic expression through drawing, learning about the history of drawing, the different drawing styles, and how they have evolved over time. Students will create an original comic book story as a means of expressing their ideas and emotions. This work will be done in groups of 3 to 5 students and should be completed within a four-week period.
Detailed Project Description:
Students will create a comic book story incorporating the artistic elements learned during the course. The comic book story should be centered around a theme of their choice (it can be an original story, a current topic of interest, a common daily life situation, a historical incident, etc.).
This interdisciplinary project combines Arts and Portuguese Language. First, students must develop the plot of the story, characterizing the setting, characters, and plot. Through this, they will apply the knowledge acquired in Portuguese Language to construct and structure the narrative correctly. Next, they will design and draw the comic book story, using the drawing skills learned in Arts.
Required Materials:
- Drawing paper or sketchbook.
- Pencils, eraser, and sharpener.
- Colored pens, colored pencils, or markers.
- Ruler or square (optional).
- Camera or scanner to digitize the final artwork.
Detailed Activity Steps:
- Research different drawing and comic book styles, identifying the unique characteristics of each (1st week).
- Select a theme for the comic book story and develop the plot (2nd week).
- Draw the comic book story, incorporating the learned styles and techniques (3rd and 4th week).
- Review and finalize the comic book story. If necessary, use colors to highlight important elements (4th week).
- Digitize the final comic book and prepare the project report (4th week).
Project Deliverables:
-
Original drawings of the comic book story, digitized or photographed for preservation.
-
A project report, which should include:
a. Introduction: A brief explanation of the chosen theme for the comic book story, its relevance, and how it relates to artistic expression through drawing.
b. Development: Detailed description of the comic book story creation process. It should explain the chosen drawing styles, how they were incorporated into the comic book story, the methodology used in drawing elaboration, and a discussion on the results obtained.
c. Conclusion: Conclusions drawn from the project, including what the students learned about artistic expression through drawing and how it applies to the real world. It should also discuss how the project helped enhance technical and socio-emotional skills.
d. Bibliography: References of the resources used to learn drawing styles and create the comic book story.
Students should ensure that the written report complements the activities developed. This should be done through a well-structured narrative that links the drawing process and artistic expression to the learned theory, the challenges encountered, the proposed solutions, and the final results achieved.
