The genres and styles in photography and video are as diverse as the people who create them. From realistic portraits to conceptual abstraction, these channels offer endless possibilities for creative expression.

Importance of Photography and Video in Today's Society

We live in a world saturated with images, and the ability to understand and create photographs and videos is increasingly important. In education, photography and video are essential tools for teaching and learning, allowing complex concepts to be easily understood.

Furthermore, social media and the internet have greatly expanded the reach and influence of these forms of expression. At work, in leisure, and in personal life, we all interact with photographs and videos daily.

Learning to understand and create photographs and videos is not just a valuable skill, it is a way to become a more active and informed participant in our visual culture.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "My Neighborhood, My Story"

Project Objective

The objective of this activity is to awaken the artistic eye of students through video and photography techniques, encouraging them to perceive and value the history, culture, and particularities of their neighborhood, being able to express them in a creative way.

Project Description

In this project, groups of 3 to 5 students should create a short documentary (3-5 minutes), highlighting the history, culture, and visual and social aspects of their neighborhood. In addition, students must create a set of 5 photographs that illustrate and complement the documentary's narrative.

Required Materials

• Image and video capture device (can be a smartphone, digital camera, etc.)
• Video and image editing software - there are free tools available for computers and smartphones.
• Notes and script sketches for the documentary.

Project Step by Step

1. Initial Research: Start by identifying the history and main points of interest in your neighborhood. Explore the various forms of artistic expression present in the area. Take notes on all information, as this will form the basis of your script.

2. Script: Based on the research, develop a script for the documentary. Include which images/locations you intend to capture, as well as the interviews or reports that can enrich the narrative.

3. Image Capture: Go out into the field! Capture the videos and photos according to the established script. Remember to explore different angles and shots.

4. Editing: Use editing software to assemble the documentary. Include subtitles, transitions, sound effects, and music, if necessary.

5. Finalization: Finalize the documentary and select the 5 photographs that best complement the narrative.

Project Delivery

Groups will have one week to complete this project, and their delivery consists of:

• 3-5 minute documentary presenting the neighborhood.
• Set of 5 photographs illustrating the neighborhood.
• Report containing the following topics:
  • Introduction: Provide context for the neighborhood, the importance of artistic expression through photography and video, and the project's objective.
  • Development: Describe the process of creating the documentary. Explain how theory was applied in practice, the materials used, the methodology, the composition of images and videos, the difficulties encountered and how they were overcome, and the results obtained.
  • Conclusion: Reaffirm the main points of the project, the lessons learned, and the conclusions about the experience.
  • Bibliography: List the sources consulted to elaborate the work, such as books, websites, videos, among others.

This project will not only assess students' artistic-practical knowledge but also their research, scripting, image capture, video editing, and teamwork skills.
