Human relationships are fundamental to our existence and well-being. Whether they are family, friends, or school colleagues, each type of relationship plays a unique role in our lives. This is beneficial for our emotional, social, and cognitive development. In this project, we will explore the theme 'Family and Friends' through the English language, enhancing our language skills and cultural understanding.

Family, in all its variety of arrangements, is the first social group we relate to. Close relatives, such as parents, siblings, and grandparents, as well as more distant relatives, each have a specific title in English. Additionally, our friends make up another layer of social relationships, each with their own role and importance in our lives.

Introduction

Learning to communicate in English is an essential milestone in contemporary education. And one of the first steps in this process is acquiring vocabulary, which allows us to express ideas, feelings, and, above all, establish social relationships. In this project, we will focus on vocabulary related to family and friends.

In English classes, we usually learn basic words that give us the ability to talk about our families: mother, father, sister, brother, etc. However, family vocabulary can be much broader and diversified, reflecting the variety of family structures and emotional bonds that exist. Moreover, it is also important to recognize and correctly use terms related to friends and their different relationship contexts.

Mastering this vocabulary helps us share our own experiences, understand those of others, and expand our English communication skills. This is crucial for the development of language proficiency, but it also fosters empathy and respect for diversity.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: 'My Family and Friends - A Digital Poster Project'

Project Objective:

The objective of this project is to encourage students to apply and expand their English vocabulary related to family and friends in a practical and relevant context. Each group of 3 to 5 students must create a digital poster presenting their 'family' and 'friends'.

Detailed Project Description:

This practical activity aims at applying theoretical concepts of English vocabulary on the theme 'Family and Friends'. Each group of students must build a detailed digital poster showing the members of a 'family' and their 'friends', using English terms for kinship and friendship. The poster should include the name of each character as well as the English relationship term (for example, 'mother', 'best friend', etc.). Additionally, a brief description in English for each character describing their characteristics and interests should be included.

The 'families' and 'friends' in the posters do not need to be based on reality. In fact, we encourage creativity: the characters can be real people, fictional, or even animals, as long as the English kinship and friendship terms are used correctly.

Required Materials:

Groups can use any graphic design software of their choice to create the digital poster. This can include free online software like Canva, or more advanced software like Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop.

Detailed Step-by-Step:

1. Divide the students into groups of 3 to 5 members.
2. Briefly discuss the project instructions and clarify any doubts.
3. The groups should start by researching and discussing English kinship and friendship vocabulary.
4. Once they have enough vocabulary, they should begin creating their 'family' and 'friends'.
5. Then, it's time to draw or choose images for the characters and start assembling the poster in the chosen digital software.
6. Each character should be clearly identified with the English relationship term and a brief description in English.
7. Do a final review before printing or saving the digital poster.
8. Prepare to present the poster to the class, explaining the kinship and friendship relationships between the characters.

Project Deliverables:

The project includes two deliverables:

1. The Digital Poster: it should be saved in JPEG or PDF format and emailed to the teacher by the end of the week. The teacher should print the posters for an exhibition in the classroom.

2. The Project Report: in addition to the poster, each group must write a report detailing the creation process, the challenges faced and how they were solved, as well as the importance of teamwork. This report should be structured as follows:

   • Introduction: present the project, the objective, the relevance of the theme 'Family and Friends' in learning English and in the real world.
   • Development: describe in detail the research process of vocabulary and construction of the digital poster. Explain the methodology used, and describe each character and their relationships. Discuss the challenges faced and how they were solved.
   • Conclusion: summarize the main points of the project and discuss what was learned from the experience, both in terms of English vocabulary and collaborative work.
   • Bibliography: list all sources of information used to carry out the project.

Students should email the report to the teacher by the end of the week, along with the digital poster. Both will be evaluated considering the correct application of vocabulary, creativity, and group collaboration.
