Introduction
Our planet is an incredibly diverse place both in terms of landscape and climate. The world is divided into several climatic zones, each with specific climate characteristics and patterns. These zones are determined by latitude, altitude, ocean currents, wind direction, and local topography.
Earth, in its rotation and translation movement, undergoes changes in the incidence of solar rays throughout the year, which generates different climatic patterns in various parts of the world. The atmosphere, a layer of gases that surrounds the earth, plays a vital role in maintaining the appropriate temperature for life on the planet and is the main driver of the different climates we have on our planet.
Weather is the climatic condition of a place at a given moment, while climate is the pattern of weather conditions in a specific location over a long period of time. Weather and climate are influenced by a variety of factors, including latitude, altitude, proximity to large bodies of water, and ocean currents.
Contextualization
Climate plays an important role in people's lives around the world, directly impacting our economy, health, and the way we live our lives. For example, climate patterns influence agriculture, as different crops require different temperature and precipitation conditions to grow.
Furthermore, the growing issue of climate change makes understanding our climate even more relevant. Human activities are increasing the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which is raising the planet's average temperature, leading to disastrous consequences such as rising sea levels, increased occurrence of extreme weather events like hurricanes, and more intense droughts.
Practical Activity
Activity Title: Climate around the World: A Multidisciplinary Journey
Objective:
The objective of this activity is to provide an interactive and multidisciplinary learning experience for students, exploring the concepts of climate, weather, climatic zones, human impact on climate, and climate change. With this activity, students will have the opportunity to understand the importance and effects of climate in different parts of the world.
Detailed Project Description:
Groups of 3 to 5 students will choose different regions of the world to study their climate. They will be responsible for researching the selected region, analyzing the climate and weather of the location, studying the climatic zones, understanding the human impact on the climate, and finally discussing the observed climate changes in the region.
This project will last 12 hours per student, spread over two weeks, during Geography and Science classes.
Required Materials:
- Internet access for research
- Materials to create graphs and maps (paper, colored pencils, ruler, etc.)
- Presentation software (PowerPoint, Google Slides, etc.)
Detailed Step-by-Step Guide for the Activity:

Definition of regions: Groups will define the regions they would like to research. The regions should be in different climatic zones.

Research on the region: Students will research the chosen region, collecting data on the geography of the location, population, economy, culture, etc.

Climate and weather analysis: Using resources like the ClimaTempo website, students will analyze the climate and weather of the location throughout the year, collecting data on temperature, rainfall, winds, etc. They will also identify the climatic zone of the region.

Human impact on climate: After having a solid understanding of the region's climate, students will research how human activity has impacted the local climate.

Climate change: Finally, groups will research the climate changes in the region, how global warming has affected the climate, weather patterns, and life in the region.
Deliverables:
Groups will present their findings to the class in a 15-20 minute presentation using presentation software. The presentation should include:
- An introduction to the region.
- Description of the region's climate and weather, with graphs and maps to illustrate.
- Discussion on human impact in the region and the climate.
- Analysis of observed climate changes in the region, including any future predictions.
After the presentation, each group must write a report on the project, containing the following topics:
- Introduction: Contextualizing the theme, its relevance, and how it applies to the chosen region, as well as the project's objective.
- Development: Explaining the theory behind the project's concepts, detailing the activity, indicating the methodology used, and finally presenting and discussing the results obtained.
- Conclusion: Summarizing the main points, explaining the learnings obtained, and drawing conclusions about the project and the chosen region.
- Bibliography: Listing the sources used in the project.
The report serves not only as a way to assess the knowledge acquired by students but also to evaluate their written communication skills, time management, and teamwork.
