Context

Water is vital for life on our planet, it is present in all biological processes and plays a crucial role in Earth's physical systems. However, despite its importance, responsible management of our water resources is often neglected, leading to environmental degradation and water crises. Understanding how water moves through our planet (the water cycle) and how we can efficiently manage and reuse our water is an important step towards sustainability.

The water cycle is a fundamental concept in geography that describes how water moves on, above, and below Earth's surface. This occurs through the processes of evaporation, transpiration, condensation, precipitation, and runoff. Understanding this cycle and how it is affected by urban and rural environments is essential for effective water resource management.

Part of the water cycle that is often overlooked is runoff, especially in urban environments. Runoff occurs when water flows over the land surface and can lead to problems such as erosion and flooding. In urban environments, where much of the surface is impermeable, runoff can be particularly problematic.

The Importance of Water Resource Utilization

Water is a limited and precious resource. The demand for water is increasing, while the supply is decreasing, due to factors such as climate change and pollution. Therefore, it is vital that we learn to reuse water whenever possible.

Water reuse not only saves clean water but can also reduce energy demand and water treatment costs. Water reuse can occur at many levels, from individual use at home to the community and municipal levels. At all these scales, responsible water reuse can help ensure that we will have enough water for future generations.

Practical Activity: "Creation of a Mini Watershed and Water Reuse"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to understand how water moves across Earth's surface, with a specific focus on the process of surface runoff in a simulated environment. In addition, students will learn about water reuse by creating a water collection and reuse system in their model.

Detailed Project Description

Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5, should create a mini watershed, simulating both an urban and a rural environment. They should also build a water collection and reuse system to demonstrate the importance of water resource reuse.

Required Materials

  • Large tray to hold water (can be a disposable baking container)
  • Clay (to create the "rural" environment)
  • Small building blocks or Legos (to simulate buildings in an "urban" environment)
  • Sponges
  • Plastic cups
  • Straws

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Each group should start the activity by collecting the necessary materials.
  2. Students should mold the clay inside the tray to create their "rural environment," forming hills, valleys, and rivers.
  3. Next, students should create the "urban environment" in the tray, using the building blocks. They should build structures near the rivers, representing cities and communities along the rivers.
  4. Once the rural and urban environments are created, students should pour water at the highest point of the watershed and observe how water moves through the environments.
  5. Students should observe and discuss how water runoff is different in the rural environment compared to the urban one.
  6. Next, students should build a water collection and reuse system using sponges, plastic cups, and straws. They should place the sponge in areas where water accumulates, allowing the sponge to absorb the water. The straw should be placed in such a way that the water drained from the sponge is collected in a plastic cup.
  7. Students should then discuss how the collected water can be reused.

Project Deliverables

At the end of this practical project, each group should produce a report documenting the entire process. This report should be divided into four main sections: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

  • Introduction: Provide context on the theme of "water resource utilization." Explain why it is important and how it is relevant to the real world. Describe the objective of this project.

  • Development: Include a detailed explanation of the theory behind water runoff, both in rural and urban environments. Explain how you carried out the activity, including the methodology used to create both the watershed and the water collection system. Discuss the results you observed and what discoveries were made.

  • Conclusions: Revisit the main points of your work. Reflect on what you learned about water runoff and water reuse. Discuss the implications of these learnings for real-life water resource management.

  • Bibliography: Mention all sources (books, websites, videos, etc.) that the group used as a basis to understand the project and the theme.
