There are three main types of rocks: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Each type of rock is created through a different geological process, and although all rocks are solid, they have very distinct appearances and compositions.
Igneous rocks are formed when magma cools and solidifies. Sedimentary rocks are created when sediments accumulate and harden over time. Finally, metamorphic rocks are formed when an existing rock is altered by heat and pressure.
Importance and Real-World Applications
Rocks, both in their natural form and when modified by humans, are used for a variety of purposes. At home, you can find rocks on your granite countertop, in the ceiling tiles, or even in your jewelry. In industry, rocks are used in construction, cement production, as raw material in glass manufacturing, among many other applications.
Geography, in turn, studies the distribution of rocks on the Earth's surface and how they influence the characteristics of the terrain, climate, soil, and vegetation of a region. Understanding how rocks are formed and distributed in the environment is essential for the sustainable use of natural resources and for the mitigation of natural disasters, such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Project Objective
The objective of this activity is to provide a practical opportunity for students to learn about the different types of rocks and their distribution in their local community. Students will be encouraged to explore, collect, and identify examples of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks.
Detailed Project Description
Groups of 3 to 5 students will conduct a 'geological expedition' to find and collect examples of different types of rocks in their local community. After collecting the examples, students will work together to identify the type of rock and analyze its characteristics.
This project should be completed within a month and will require approximately five to ten hours of work per student.

- Bibliography: Indication of the sources they relied on to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.
At the end of this project, students should be able to relate climatic patterns, soil types, terrain, and vegetation formations to the types of rocks found in their region. They should also develop socio-emotional skills such as time management, communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, and proactivity.
