Soil Formation: Degradation and Conservation Methods

Contextualization

Soil is one of Earth's most essential natural resources. It hosts a multitude of organisms, provides a place for plants to grow, and plays a crucial role in the water cycle. Understanding soil formation, as well as degradation and conservation processes, is crucial to comprehending how we can sustainably manage this vital resource.

Soil formation is a natural process that involves parent rock, climate processes, vegetation, and other organisms. It begins with the break-down of parent rock either by climate (rain, moisture, heat, among others) or by the action of living organisms (microorganisms, plants, etc.). Over time, this material mixes with organic matter and gains layers, which we call soil horizons. This process of soil formation is called pedogenesis.

However, soil degradation is a problem that is becoming increasingly prevalent worldwide. It occurs when soil loses its capacity to function proficiently as a living system in an ecosystem. This can be caused by a number of factors, including pollution, erosion, compaction, and loss of organic matter.

There are many different methods for soil conservation. Some of these methods include crop rotation, contour plowing, incorporating organic matter into the soil, proper waste management, and composting.

These subjects are of utmost importance to our daily lives and our survival. Soil is - literally - the foundation of our food, as well as many ecosystems. Moreover, severe soil degradation can result in problems like desertification and loss of biodiversity, which can have severe consequences not only for nature, but for society as a whole.

Learning about soil formation, soil degradation, and soil conservation not only provides us with a deeper comprehension of the natural world, but also equips us with the tools and knowledge we need to protect our planet.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Land in Sight - Knowing and Protecting Our Soils

Project Objective

To analyze different types of soils, identify their characteristics, understand degradation processes, and implement soil conservation strategies on a scale model.

Detailed Project Description

Groups of students (3-5 students per group) will be responsible for studying soil formation, identifying degradation processes, and suggesting ways to conserve it. To do this, they will collect soil samples from different places (this could be the school garden, a park, their backyard, etc.), analyze the soil properties, simulate degradation processes, and investigate how these can be mitigated.

Necessary Materials

  • Soil samples
  • Transparent containers
  • Water
  • Magnifying glass
  • Ruler
  • Bibliographic research (books, websites, videos)

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Collecting Soil Samples: Students should collect at least three different soil samples. Students should take pictures and record where each sample was collected and the characteristics of the site.

  2. Soil Analysis: Students should transfer each sample to a transparent container, add water, and shake the container. After a few hours, the different soil components (sand, silt, clay) will settle into layers. Students should use the ruler to measure the thickness of each layer and calculate the percentages of each component.

  3. Simulation of Degradation Processes: Students should choose a degradation process (e.g., water erosion) and simulate it on a small scale. This can be done, for example, by placing a handful of soil on a sloping board and pouring water over it to simulate rain.

  4. Soil Conservation Strategies: Students should research and suggest three practical ways to conserve soil that could be implemented to protect soil from degradation. Students should justify their choices.

  5. Recording Activities: Throughout the process, students should record their observations, results, and conclusions.

  6. Preparation of the Final Report: Students should produce a final report, following the guidelines described below.

Project Deliverables

The group of students should submit a written document containing:

  1. Introduction: Description of the project objective, importance, and real-world application of the theme. The collection site of each soil sample must be described in detail and accompanied by photos.

  2. Development: Detailed analysis of the soil samples, explaining the observed properties and composition of each sample. Description and discussion of the simulated degradation process, showing the results obtained. The suggested soil conservation strategies should be presented, justifying the choices and describing how each strategy could be implemented.

  3. Conclusions: General observations about the project, what the students learned, and the conclusions that were drawn.

  4. Bibliography: List of resources used to carry out the project, such as books, websites, videos, etc.

The document should be written in a clear, organized, and detailed manner, allowing for a complete understanding of the work carried out by the students. Images, photos, or graphs may be used to complement the information.
