Living in a society involves various interactions, whether with other individuals or with the institutions that compose it. To understand how our daily lives work, it is important to understand the economy of the place where we live, especially the trade and service sectors. These two sectors are the basis of the economy of many cities and contribute significantly to the formation of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of countries.

Trade involves the buying and selling of goods, whether durable goods (such as furniture and cars) or non-durable goods (such as food). The service sector is quite diversified, involving everything from personal services (such as hairdressers and private teachers) to business activities (such as tourism and advertising). Both sectors, despite their apparent difference, are interdependent and crucial for the functioning of a region's economy.

In our daily activities, we interact with trade and services in various ways. When we go to school, we use transportation services. When buying a snack during the break, we are using trade. When we return home and use the internet, we are interacting with both sectors. Therefore, understanding how these sectors work is essential to understand our role in society and how our daily actions influence the local economy.

Cities are the main hubs of concentration for these sectors because that's where there is a greater concentration of people to consume these services and products. The changes in human interaction with nature after the emergence of cities have greatly influenced the development of these sectors. Cities not only concentrate most services and trades but also determine how they are geographically distributed.

Understanding the importance of these sectors in the Brazilian economy is crucial to understanding how the country develops and how each region contributes to national development. The purpose of this project is for you to delve into the world of trade and services to better understand their roles in the local and national economy.

Practical Activity: Exploring Trade and Services in the Local Community

Project Objective

This project aims to investigate the impact and importance of the trade and service sectors in the local economy. Students will engage in primary and secondary research, collecting and analyzing data to understand how these sectors operate and contribute to the local economy.

Detailed Project Description

Students, grouped in three to five, will conduct an exploratory field research (with the guidance and supervision of teachers and guardians) in local shops and service establishments. Each group will select five establishments: three trades and two services, preferably from different sectors (for example, a clothing store, a grocery store, an electronics store, a beauty salon, and a language school).

• Notebook for notes
• Camera (optional, for visual documentation)
• Computer with internet access (for research and report preparation)

Detailed Step-by-Step

1. Each group will select which establishments to visit. Remember to ask for permission from the responsible parties at the locations and always be accompanied by a responsible adult.
2. During the visit, students should observe the operation of the trade or service and conduct a brief interview with the responsible parties, if possible, asking about:
   • The target audience
   • The volume of daily activities
   • Their role in the local community
3. Students will record their observations, interview responses, and take photos (if allowed) to document their visits.
4. After collecting data, students should analyze and compare the information collected to identify how these establishments contribute to the local economy.
5. To assist in the analysis, students can research more about the trade and service sector on the internet and in books.
6. After the analysis, the groups should prepare a report documenting their findings according to the topics: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.

In the report:

• Introduction: Contextualize the theme (Trade and Service), its relevance and real-world application, the importance of trade and service for the Brazilian economy, as well as the objective of this project.
• Development: Detailed description of each visit made, including images highlighting the establishment, the role played by that trade or service in the community, the information obtained in the interviews, the analysis of the collected information, and the relationship of the collected data with the theory studied.
• Conclusion: Return to the main points addressed during the visits and in the analysis. Explicit the importance of trade and service in the local and Brazilian economy and what was learned during the project.
• Bibliography: Indicate the research sources used to complete the theoretical part of the project, as well as any consultations made to clarify doubts that arose during the field research.

This project should take between five to ten hours per student, over a month, considering the time for research, visits, data analysis, and report preparation. Teamwork will be essential for task division and for the discussion of ideas and conclusions.
