Introduction
Deforestation is the process of cutting and removing trees in forests and woodlands. It is mainly done to make room for agriculture, livestock, logging, and urbanization. Due to its destructive nature, deforestation has been receiving increasing global attention and is considered one of the main environmental issues the world faces today.
Deforestation significantly contributes to climate change by releasing carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, which is stored in trees. Additionally, it can lead to loss of biodiversity, soil erosion, and disruption of the water cycle. However, the need for land for agriculture, logging for paper and wood production, and urbanization for city expansion are some of the reasons fueling deforestation practices.
Contextualization
Brazil is one of the countries most affected by deforestation in the world, with the Amazon Rainforest being the most impacted. Despite its natural riches and importance for maintaining the global climate, the Amazon faces high deforestation rates, mainly due to the need for land for livestock and agriculture.
Understanding the causes and consequences of deforestation is vital for all of us, as it directly impacts our future. Knowing the climate patterns, soil types, terrain, and vegetation formations, as well as the characteristics of landscapes transformed by human work in agriculture and industrialization processes, are fundamental elements for understanding this issue.
Practical Activity
Title: "From Green to Gray: A Deforestation Simulation"
Project Objective:
This project aims to provide a better understanding of the effects of deforestation and the importance of preserving natural resources. Through this practical project, students will be able to understand how deforestation alters the landscape and biodiversity and what the consequences are for climate, soil, and life as a whole.
Project Description:
Student groups will create a three-dimensional model representing a forest before and after deforestation. The "before" part of the model should depict a dense forest with a variety of trees, animals, and a river. The "after" part should show the same area, but now with fewer trees, less biodiversity, soil erosion, and a change in the river's course.
Required Materials:
- Cardboard or suitable base for the model
- Green paint for the forest floor
- Brown paint for deforested soil
- Clay or paper mache to create relief (mountains, valleys, etc.)
- Colored paper or sticks for trees
- Cotton for clouds
- Stationery materials (glue, scissors, markers, etc.)
- Small animal toys or paper figures
- Blue cellophane paper for the river
Step by Step:
- Planning: Groups should start by researching deforestation and forest life. They should choose a specific type of forest to represent in their model and learn about the fauna, flora, and ecosystem present there.
- Design: After the research, students should sketch a draft of the model, including the representation of before and after deforestation.
- Construction: With the plan in hand, students will start building the model. They can use clay or paper mache to create the forest relief and paint it green to represent the vegetation.
- Adding Elements: After the paint dries, students can start adding the trees, animals, and river using the predefined materials.
- Deforestation Representation: Next, students should show the effect of deforestation on the "after" side of the model. They should remove most of the trees, represent soil erosion and the change in the river's course, and show the reduction in biodiversity.
- Report: Finally, students should write a report documenting the entire process. This report should include an introduction to the deforestation issue, a detailed description of the activity carried out, discussion of the results obtained, and the project's conclusion.
