Project Aim
The aim of this activity is for you, in groups of 3 to 5 students, to create a thematic map of your city, neighborhood, or school, highlighting important geographical and cultural aspects. The map should include a graphic and numerical scale, reference points, a true north, and a coordinate system.
Project Description
In this activity, each group will select a territory of their choice (it can be the city where they live, the neighborhood, or even the school) and build a thematic map of that place. The map should contain geographical aspects (rivers, mountains, location of important buildings) and cultural elements (tourist attractions, squares, leisure areas, etc.). In addition, the groups should include a graphic and numerical scale, a true north, and a coordinate system.
Materials
- A3 paper or cardboard
- Pencils and erasers
- Colored markers
- Ruler
- Geography textbooks
- Computer with Internet access (for research)
Activity Step-by-Step
- Gather your group and decide which territory will be mapped.
- Do some preliminary research on the chosen location, gathering important information such as: main geographical features, significant cultural elements, location of important buildings, among others.
- Draw an initial sketch of the map, indicating the main reference points.
- Define the true north and create a graphic and numerical scale for the map.
- Add cultural and geographical elements to the map.
- Finalize the map, using colors to differentiate the types of features shown. For example, leisure areas can be colored green, residential areas blue, etc.
- Finally, create a legend for your map.
After the map is finished, each group should write a report explaining the creation process, the difficulties encountered, the decisions made, and the importance of the elements included in the map. The report should contain the following topics:
- Introduction: The student should contextualize the theme, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the objective of this project.
- Development: The student should explain the theory behind the central theme(s) of the project, explain the activity in detail, indicate the methodology used, and finally present and discuss the results obtained.
- Conclusion: The student should conclude the work by revisiting their main points, explaining the lessons learned, and the conclusions drawn about the project.
- Bibliography: The student should indicate the sources used to work on the project, such as books, web pages, videos, etc.
The map created by the groups will be the main deliverable of this project, but the report is equally important, as it is where students will have the opportunity to discuss the learning process, the difficulties encountered, and the solutions developed.
