Commerce and Service

Context

Theoretical Introduction

Commerce and services are two crucial areas of the economy that drive development, sustain the survival, and evolution of civilizations. Commerce involves the exchange of goods and services between people or entities and is a fundamental economic activity that allows the circulation of goods, creating an interdependent economy.

The service sector, in turn, is a sector of the economy that provides services instead of physical products. These are intangible and include things like education, health, tourism, entertainment, financial services, among others.

The combination of these two sectors in cities and their interrelation with other areas (such as agriculture and industry) is the beating heart of the modern economy. They directly impact the lifestyle, work opportunities, human migration, and the local landscape.

Context

Understanding how commerce and services function and why they are so relevant is essential to comprehend the dynamics of society itself. Cities are major centers of commerce and services, as well as centers of work, study, and residence. The way commerce and services are structured in a city can impact everything from traffic to the consumption patterns of the population.

In Brazil, commerce and services are an increasingly significant portion of our economy. According to data from IBGE, together, commerce and services represented (in 2018) more than half of the Brazilian GDP. Understanding these sectors is crucial to understanding the Brazilian economy.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: 'Map of Commerce and Services in My City'

Project Objective

This project aims to deeply understand how commerce and services are distributed in the city where students study, their importance to the local economy, and how they influence the lives of residents. Additionally, students should apply concepts of geography and economics, with data analysis and teamwork.

Detailed Project Description

Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5 people, will survey the commerce and services in a specific neighborhood of their city. Each group will be responsible for a different neighborhood, which will be drawn by lot.

Students should interview residents and shopkeepers, research official city data sources (such as the city hall and IBGE), as well as observe the physical distribution of commercial establishments and services, recognizing their influence on urban space occupation.

This research will result in the creation of a map detailing the distribution of commerce and services in their chosen neighborhood. The map should be accompanied by a written analysis of the results, explaining what was observed and the conclusions drawn.

Required Materials

  • Notebook and pencil for notes.
  • Camera (can be a cellphone) to take photos.
  • Internet for research.
  • Map creation software (there are several free online options, such as Google My Maps).

Detailed Activity Steps

  1. Online Research: Before starting the field research, you should conduct online research about your neighborhood, seeking information such as the number of inhabitants, location, history, etc. This information will help contextualize the subsequent observations.

  2. Field Research: Visit the neighborhood that was drawn for your group. You should observe the distribution and types of commerce and services available. Take photos of the establishments (with permission, of course!).

  3. Interviews: Talk to residents and shopkeepers in the neighborhood. Ask questions about the importance of local commerce and service to them. How does this impact their daily lives?

  4. Map Creation: With the collected information, create the map of the neighborhood. The locations of the businesses and services should be marked, along with information such as the type of establishment, opening hours, etc.

  5. Results Analysis: With the map ready, it's time to discuss the results. What did you observe? Is there a concentration of any type of commerce or service? How does this relate to the distribution of residents? How do commerce and services impact the life of this neighborhood?

Project Deliverables

At the end of this project, each group must deliver:

  1. Neighborhood Map: containing the location and information of the businesses and services.

  2. Report: containing the neighborhood's contextualization, the description of the methodology used in the research, the analysis of the collected data, and the conclusions. The report should also include an introduction explaining the relevance of commerce and services to the economy and the city, as well as a bibliography with the sources researched.

  3. Class Presentation: each group must present their map and the main conclusions of their report to the class. This is an opportunity to discuss your findings with classmates and learn from others' experiences.

This project should take more than 12 hours for each participant, including research, data collection, interviews, map creation, report writing, and presentation preparation.
