Introduction to the concept of maps
Types of maps are invaluable tools in our daily lives. They are used for a wide variety of purposes, from navigation and trip planning to scientific studies and data analysis.
Maps are graphic representations of a geographic space and its features, providing an abstract and simplified view of a specific area. There are several types of maps, including physical maps, political maps, topographic maps, thematic maps, among others, each with its own characteristics and purposes.
- Physical maps are used to show physical features such as mountains, rivers, and lakes.
- Political maps show political boundaries, such as countries and states.
- Topographic maps represent the altitude and relief of an area.
- Thematic maps, on the other hand, focus on a specific topic, such as climate, population, or economy.
The importance of maps
Maps play a fundamental role in our understanding and interaction with the world around us. They help us navigate, understand geographical, cultural, and political features, plan trips, and make informed decisions. Moreover, they are indispensable in various professional fields, such as geography, urban planning, architecture, transportation, tourism, among others.

Activity Title: "Mapping Our Neighborhood"
Project Objective:
The objective of this project is for students to become familiar with the different types of maps and how they reflect the geographical reality. Students will collaborate to create different maps of the same location - the school's neighborhood - each focusing on different aspects: physical, political, and thematic.
Detailed Project Description:
Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5. Each group will be responsible for creating three different maps of the school's neighborhood:
- Physical Map: Showing physical features such as rivers, parks, mountains, etc.
- Political Map: Identifying the neighborhood's boundaries, street names, community important locations, etc.
- Thematic Map: Students will choose a theme of interest for the map (for example, distribution of commercial and residential areas, location of leisure zones, etc.)
Required Materials:
- Cardboard or large cardstock for each group to create the maps
- Colored pencils, markers, and highlighters
- Ruler or compass to help draw and measure distances
- Research resources, such as Google Maps, local geography books, etc.
Detailed Step-by-Step:
- The teacher will initially explain the different types of maps and how each is used to represent different geographical information
- Each group will research using the available resources and collect information about the school's neighborhood
- Students will start drawing their physical map, using colored pencils to distinguish different physical features
- Next, the group will draw the political map, highlighting boundaries, streets, and important locations
- Finally, the group will create their thematic map, based on the chosen theme
- Groups will present their maps to the class, explaining the features they chose to represent and why.
Project Deliverables:
After completing the practical part of the project, groups must submit a written report following the specified structure:
- Introduction: Description of the studied neighborhood, justification for the choice of the thematic map theme, and the project's relevance.
- Development: Detailed explanation of the map creation process, including information collection, choice of features to be represented, decisions made during the process, challenges faced, and how they were overcome. Additionally, students should explain how they measured distances and presented boundaries on their maps.
- Conclusion: Reflection on what they learned from the project, how the ability to read and create maps can be useful in their lives, and what conclusions they were able to draw by comparing the three different maps of the same location.
- Bibliography: References of the resources used for research and project implementation.
When presenting the maps and submitting the report, students must demonstrate their acquired technical skills (measuring distances on maps and presenting boundaries) and applied socio-emotional skills (time management, communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, proactivity).
This project is designed to be completed in one week, with work time in the classroom and at home, as needed.
