Practical Activity: 'Modeling City Growth'

Project Objectives

• Understand the historical process of city growth.
• Identify different factors that influence city growth.

Project Description

Groups of 3 to 5 students will be responsible for creating a three-dimensional model of a fictional city, demonstrating its evolution over time. The model should illustrate changes in human interaction with nature from the shift from rural to urban settings.

Required Materials

• Cardboard, colored papers, and colored pens.
• Scissors, glue, tape, ruler.
• Modeling material such as clay, playdough, etc.
• Research support material, such as textbooks, internet access, etc.

Step by Step

1. Research (1 hour): Research how cities develop and the various factors that influence this process. Use the recommended sources in the introduction and any others that may help.

2. Planning (1 hour): Decide how your fictional city will be. Did it start as a village? Was it built around an industry or an important trade route? How did the city grow? What kind of infrastructure does it have? What problems arose with growth?

3. Model Creation (1-2 hours): Use the available materials to create a 3D model of your city. The city can be divided into sections representing different time periods to show the evolution of city growth.

4. Report (1 hour): Finally, each group must produce a written report based on the work done. This document should have an introduction, development, conclusions, and bibliography.
