Earth, our planet, is made up of different types of rocks that play a crucial role in the way we live. Rocks are the basis of the soil where we grow food, are used in the construction of houses, roads and buildings, and are also fundamental in the extraction of useful mineral resources. But first of all, we need to understand what rocks are.

Rocks are natural aggregates of one or more minerals and are classified into three main types: igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. Igneous rocks are formed from the cooling of magma, sedimentary rocks are formed by the accumulation of sediments, and metamorphic rocks are formed by the transformation of other types of rocks under conditions of extreme pressure and temperature.

Each type of rock has a distinct origin and formation process, which influences its composition and structure, and therefore its properties and uses. Understanding these processes and how rocks are formed is crucial to understanding the geological history of the Earth and for the sustainable exploration of its resources.

Knowing how to identify the different types of rocks is also essential in various professional fields, such as geology, architecture, civil engineering, agronomy, among others. Understanding the origin of rocks and how they transform over time allows us to better understand the natural processes and dynamics of the Earth.

In addition, rocks are fundamental components of the landscape and landform formation and have a significant impact on soil formation and plant growth. Likewise, the climate pattern of an area can influence the type of rock that forms there. Therefore, the study of rocks is interdisciplinary, involving geography, earth sciences, ecology, climatology, among other areas of knowledge.

Practical Activity

Activity title: Rocks Around the World

Project objective:

The activity aims to bring students closer to the concepts addressed theoretically, allowing them to experience the study of different types of rocks in practice. Through this experience, it is expected that students will be able to identify the three main types of rocks, understand the formation process of each one and relate them to other geographical aspects such as climate, soil, relief and vegetation of the area where they were found.

Detailed description of the project:

The project will be carried out by groups of 3 to 5 students and will have an estimated duration of more than 12 hours of work per student. Each group will be responsible for investigating a specific geographic region, identifying the predominant rocks in the area, and studying their characteristics and formation processes.

The groups should collect rock samples (or photographs, if collection is not possible due to distance or access restrictions), classify these samples according to type (igneous, sedimentary or metamorphic), and analyze the characteristics that aid in identification.

The groups should also research the region where the rocks were found, identify the predominant soil type, climate and vegetation and make connections between these aspects and the predominant type of rock.

Finally, they should relate the rocks studied to the relief of the area, investigating how local geology influences the formation of the observed landscapes.

Thus, the project seeks to integrate Geography and Earth Sciences, offering students an opportunity to apply the knowledge acquired about rocks to a real context.

Materials required:

  • Rock samples or photographs
  • Books and online materials for consultation
  • Magnifying glass or microscope
  • Paper and pen for notes
  • Camera to record the process

Detailed step by step:

  1. Students should form groups of 3 to 5 members and choose a geographic region for research.
  2. Each group should collect rock samples (or photographs) from the chosen region.
  3. The groups should then classify the rocks according to type: igneous, sedimentary or metamorphic.
  4. Students should research the characteristics and formation processes of each type of rock found.
  5. They should also investigate the region of origin of the rocks, identifying the predominant soil type, climate and vegetation.
  6. The groups should make connections between the rocks studied and the relief of the region.
  7. Each group should prepare an oral and written presentation about their research.
  8. The presentations should be delivered together with the report, which should be written in the format of a scientific report, containing sections of introduction, development, conclusions and bibliography.

Project deliverables

The final product of the project will be a presentation, accompanied by a written report. The presentation should clearly and concisely convey the results of the research conducted by the group. The report, in turn, should delve deeper into these results, providing the information in more detail.

  • The Introduction should provide a contextualization of the project, the relevance of the topic and the objectives of the work carried out.
  • In the Development, students should explain the theory about the rocks studied, the methodology used in the analysis and classification of the rocks, a detailed description of the activity, and the presentation and discussion of the results obtained.
  • In the Conclusion, students should revisit the main points presented throughout the report, describe the learning acquired and the conclusions drawn about the project.
  • The Bibliography should contain all sources consulted to carry out the project (books, websites, videos, etc).

The project allows students to learn in a practical and applied way about the different types of rocks and their relationships with the environment, in addition to developing research skills, teamwork and scientific writing.
