Contextualization
The formation of soil is a slow and dynamic process that involves the interaction of various factors such as climate, relief, living organisms, type of parent rock, and time. Soils are formed through the decomposition of rocks by physical (physical weathering) and chemical (chemical weathering) processes that give rise to a material called regolith. This material, when colonized by microorganisms and plants, gradually transforms into soil.
As a result of the joint action of various factors, each soil is unique and varies in its composition and properties. For this reason, we find different types of soil around the world, each with its own particularities and potential uses. However, the environmental issue arises when this natural resource, so important for the survival of species, is threatened.
Soil degradation occurs due to human actions such as uncontrolled urbanization, deforestation, improper use of soil for agriculture, among others. This results in the loss of nutrients and productive capacity of the soil, erosion, compaction, pollution, and even desertification. Therefore, soil management and conservation become essential actions for the protection of the environment and the guarantee of its sustainability.
Importance of the Theme
Understanding the processes of soil formation, degradation, and conservation is not only fundamental for the education of the student as a conscious citizen of their role in environmental preservation but also extremely relevant in the school and academic context.
We still live in a context of rapid climate change and population growth that pose challenges regarding the management and conservation of natural resources, including soil. Therefore, knowing and understanding the soil is of utmost importance to find solutions for the sustainable use of this resource.
Practical Activity
Title: "Solo: our factory floor"
Project Objective
To understand the formation of soil, identify the consequences of its degradation, and think of strategies for its conservation through the creation of a mini-garden in a shoebox and a detailed report on the experience.

- Soil found in the schoolyard or at home
- Small plants
- Plant seeds or grass seeds
- Water
- Magnifying glass

- Computer for writing the report
- Drawing materials (colored pencils, markers, etc.)
Detailed Project Description
This practical activity will involve the creation of a mini-garden in a shoebox that will represent different stages of soil formation, degradation, and conservation. Through this activity, students will be able to visualize and experience the different components of the soil and the importance of its conservation.
Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 and will have one week to complete the activity. Each group will need to dedicate about 2 to 4 hours to carry out the activity and prepare the final report.
Detailed Step-by-Step for Carrying Out the Activity

The groups should collect a soil sample from the schoolyard or their homes. Each group should try to obtain a soil sample that contains roots, leaves, small insects, among others.

Using the collected soil, students will create a mini-garden in the shoebox. They will plant some plants or grass seeds and monitor their evolution throughout the week.

During this period, students should observe and record the evolution of their plantations, changes in the soil, the presence of microorganisms, and other aspects they consider relevant. If possible, taking photographs of the mini-garden at different stages can be a good way to document these observations.

Students will also research different practices of soil degradation and conservation and make a small drawing on the side of the shoebox illustrating the before and after of a degraded and recovered area.

Based on their observations and research, each group will prepare a detailed report on the experience. The report should include:
Introduction: The student should contextualize the theme, its relevance, and real-world application as well as the objective of this project.
Development: The student should explain the theory behind the central theme(s) of the project, detail the activity, indicate the methodology used, and finally present and discuss the results obtained.
Conclusion: The student should conclude the work by summarizing the main points, explaining the learnings obtained, and drawing conclusions about the project.
Bibliography: The student should indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

The report and the mini-garden will be presented in class at the end of the week. Students will explain to their classmates about the evolution of their mini-garden, what they learned during the process, and the soil conservation strategies they discovered.
