Dear Students, in this project, we will explore the importance of water conservation and its impacts on our daily lives. Water is an indispensable natural resource for life, being essential for the survival of all living beings. Therefore, understanding the water cycle and how our actions impact this cycle is of utmost importance.
The water cycle, also known as the hydrological cycle, comprises the continuous exchange of water in the hydrosphere, atmosphere, land, and living beings. Water evaporates from rivers, seas, and lakes and turns into vapor. This vapor forms clouds and, under certain conditions, falls as rain, refilling rivers, seas, and lakes.
In this cycle, rainwater runoff can occur in different ways. In the urban environment, buildings and asphalt prevent water from being absorbed by the soil, causing it to go directly to rivers and sewers. In the rural environment, depending on the type of soil and vegetation, water can be absorbed and contribute to the maintenance of groundwater. It is important to understand that the more water is absorbed by the soil, the fewer negative impacts we will have, such as floods.
Contextualization
We live in a world where water is an increasingly scarce resource. According to the United Nations, approximately 2.2 billion people around the world do not have access to safe and regular drinking water. Understanding how to conserve this resource becomes a duty for all of us.
Water conservation involves preserving natural springs and reservoirs. Modern cities were built without much planning for water resource conservation. The springs were filled in and the rivers were polluted, causing a series of problems, such as water scarcity and flooding.
Practical Activity: "Water Conservation" Project
Activity Title: "Water in our city: where we are and where we can go"
Project Objective
The objective of this project is to propose an efficient action plan for water conservation in the city where they live, considering the theoretical concepts learned. In this plan, students should analyze the current scenario of water use and conservation, identify problems, and propose creative and feasible solutions.
Detailed Project Description
Students should divide themselves into groups of 3 to 5 members and together carry out the following steps:
1. Research: Identify local water conservation issues, research the city's water history and urban planning. This step involves literature review, interviews with those responsible for water supply, visits to rivers, springs, reservoirs, and water treatment plants (if possible).
2. Analysis: Compare water runoff in the city and in the countryside, identify where rainwater goes and how it is treated, recognize the influence of vegetation cover and the relevance of conservation areas.
3. Action plan: Propose a plan with actions to improve water conservation based on the research and analysis carried out.
Required Materials
- Notebook for recording observations and interviews
- Camera to document visits (can be the cell phone camera)
- Materials for project presentation: cardstock, colored pens, glue, scissors, etc.
- Internet access for research and possibly for online communication with interviewees.

At the end of the project, each group must deliver:
1. Written report: It should be formatted with the following topics:
- Introduction: Describe the importance of water conservation, the relevance of the project, and its objective.
- Development: Explain the key theoretical concepts, detail the activities carried out (research, analysis, elaboration of the plan), the methodology used and the results obtained.
- Conclusion: Summarize the learning obtained, the conclusions drawn, and the effectiveness of the proposed action plan.
- Bibliography: Indicate all sources used in the construction of the project.
2. Oral Presentation: Each group should make a presentation to the class, reporting on the experience, presenting the results obtained, and explaining the proposed action plan.
This project allows students to apply theoretical concepts in practice and deepen their understanding of the importance of water conservation. In addition, it will work skills such as teamwork, time management, communication, problem solving and creative thinking.
