Mesoamerica is a region that encompasses the southern part of North America, that is, Mexico and Central America. It was home to various ancient civilizations, such as the Olmecs, Mayans, Aztecs, and Incas. The relevance of these societies lies in their scientific, cultural, social, and economic contributions that have survived over the centuries and are still noticeable in our contemporary society.

These civilizations developed calendars, writing systems, and legal codes, as well as made important advances in agriculture, astronomy, architecture, and the arts. Mesoamerica is considered one of the six areas in the world where civilization developed independently, alongside Africa, Europe, Asia, and Oceania.

For these reasons, it is essential that we understand Mesoamerica and its cultures to better comprehend the history of human development. By studying these societies, we can catch a glimpse of the complexity and diversity of human life forms before European contact.

Introduction

In this project, we will explore the Mesoamerican civilizations, focusing on the Mayans, Incas, and Aztecs and their contributions to human civilization. We will investigate their writing systems, calendars, social structures, advances in agriculture and astronomy, as well as their impact and legacy on contemporary societies.

Understanding the Mesoamerican civilizations allows us to better grasp the history of Latin America and appreciate the diversity and cultural richness of this region. Furthermore, it can help us reflect on the impacts of colonialism and the importance of preserving and respecting different cultures and peoples.

Finally, this project will also develop important skills such as teamwork, time management, critical thinking, and problem-solving. We hope you enjoy learning about Mesoamerica!

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Exploring Mesoamerican Cultures: Mayans, Incas, and Aztecs"

Project Objective:

This project aims to educate students about Mesoamerican civilizations, their culture, habitation, inventions, and contributions to science and society. Students will work in groups of 3 to 5 to research, learn, and present about these ancient cultures, through a creative presentation that includes a three-dimensional model of a monument or structure representative of these civilizations.

Detailed Project Description:

Students, in their respective groups, will choose one of the three Mesoamerican civilizations (Mayans, Incas, and Aztecs) and will conduct in-depth research on it, addressing topics such as settlement patterns, scientific contributions (agriculture, mathematics, astronomy), art, religion, social and political structures. After the research, each group will create a model representing a monument, building, or important structure of the chosen civilization.

Required Materials:

• Cardboard, colored paper, white glue;
• Scissors, rulers, markers, and pencils;
• Modeling clay or clay;
• Reusable materials (empty milk or juice boxes);
• Computer or tablet with internet access for research.

Step by Step:

1. Divide students into groups of 3 to 5.
2. Each group chooses one of the civilizations (Mayans, Incas, or Aztecs).
3. Conduct research on the chosen civilization, focusing on the topics mentioned in the project description.
4. After the research, each group must choose the monument or structure they will represent through a model.
5. Using the provided materials, build the model. Use creativity to make the model as realistic as possible.
6. Alongside the model construction, each group should prepare a 10-15 minute presentation to explain their research and findings about the chosen civilization.

Students will have one week to complete the project, including the model construction and presentation preparation.

After completing the practical activity, groups must submit a Project Report that should address the following points:

1. Introduction: In this section, students should provide a brief summary of the chosen civilization and explain the relevance and importance of this study. The project's objective should also be described.

2. Development: This section should contain a detailed description of the chosen civilization, addressing the researched topics. Students should explain the model built and why they chose that monument or structure to represent. The research methodology used should also be described, and the results obtained discussed.

3. Conclusions: In this section, students should summarize what they learned through the project, what the main discoveries were, and how this contributes to the understanding of Mesoamerica.

4. Bibliography: Here, students should list all research sources used for the project.

The written reports, along with the model and presentation, will give students a comprehensive and practical understanding of Mesoamerican civilizations.
