What is history?

Contextualization

History is a fascinating and complex study of human experiences over time. It is the science that studies the life of man, his actions, ideas, and achievements, through the ages. History is concerned with understanding the past in order to better understand the present and project the future. It is a record of our triumphs, failures, power, tragedy, comedy, ambition, and desire. It is a fascinating and complex story, told in many languages and by many voices.

However, it is not merely a series of facts and dates, but an intricate web of events, motives, and outcomes. It examines not only what happened, but why and how it matters. By developing an understanding of the past, we gain a deeper appreciation for the present and greater discernment for the future.

History is more than a school subject. It is a discipline that has practical applications in many aspects of everyday life. Understanding history helps us to understand the world we live in and current events. It provides us with a broader perspective for making decisions and a solid foundation for debating important issues.

Importance of History

History provides a context for understanding our society and ourselves. By studying past events, we can better understand the origins of our political, economic, and social systems. This can help us to understand and respond to current or future problems. It also provides a context for understanding the cultures and people around us.

History also helps to develop critical thinking and questioning skills, which are essential for everyday life and for exercising citizenship. It teaches us how to evaluate sources of information, think critically, and make connections between events, ideas, and contexts.

To delve deeper into the subject, we suggest the following sources of information:

  • Book "History: The Science of Time" by João José Reis

  • Documentary "The Story of Things" available on YouTube

  • History course from the "Curso em Vídeo" channel on YouTube

  • "History World" website for interactive exercises and quizzes

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Historical Journey - Through Time and Evolution

Project Objective:

This project seeks not only to teach students the meaning and importance of History, but to also provide a practical understanding of the interconnectedness of History with other disciplines, such as Geography and Anthropology. The foundations of the emergence of the human species, the different ways of understanding the notion of time, its periodization, and how physical time interferes with the counting of time by history will be explored in an interactive and collaborative way.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 and will be guided on a "Historical Journey". This journey will take them through different periods of Human History, beginning with the scientific hypotheses about the emergence of the human species, passing through different civilizations and cultures, to the present day. Each group will be responsible for choosing and researching a specific historical period, detailing the scientific discoveries, technological advances, social structures, cultural traditions, and historical events. In addition, the groups should explore how the concepts of time (physical time, life cycle, counting of time) were perceived and used by that society.

To make the project more playful, students will be encouraged to recreate aspects of the culture of that time, whether through models, drawings, dramatizations, writing, music, cooking, or any other creative means they deem appropriate. At the end of the project, each group will present their findings to the class, both in an oral presentation and with a practical demonstration of their cultural recreation.

Materials Required:

  1. History books, encyclopedias, internet access for research.
  2. Variable materials for the creation of their cultural recreations, as chosen by the group.
  3. Paper and pens or access to a computer for the preparation of the written report.

Step by Step:

  1. Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Each group will choose or be assigned a period of human history to research.
  3. The groups should begin researching their historical period, focusing on the topics mentioned above and collecting a reliable bibliography.
  4. The groups must then decide on their cultural recreation and begin planning and gathering the necessary materials.
  5. Throughout the project, the groups are responsible for managing their time, collaborating effectively, and solving any problems that arise.
  6. At the end of the project, each group will present their findings to the class and demonstrate their cultural recreation.
  7. Each group must then write a detailed report of their research, findings, processes, conclusions, and experiences, following the report guidelines discussed above.

For the project to be considered complete, each group must hand in both the presentation and cultural recreation and the complete report. It is expected that through this project, students will gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for History, as well as practical skills in collaboration, problem-solving, creative thinking, and time management. Furthermore, the project aims to stimulate curiosity, a love of learning, and an enthusiasm for History.
