A Journey in Time

Time is a fascinating dimension. It moves all things, it is the invisible force that governs our lives, our actions, and our stories. But what is time? How can we measure it? How does it influence our understanding of the world? And how has it shaped and been shaped by History?

In this project, we will embark on a journey through time to explore these concepts. Through a historical lens, we will investigate how different cultures and civilizations perceive and tell time, how different events and occurrences are grouped and divided, and how all of this impacts our understanding of the world.

The Importance of Time in History

Understanding time is crucial to understanding History. As historians, we use time scales to analyze events, to trace trends and evolutions, to create coherent narratives, and to understand the continuities and ruptures throughout History.

Time is also a fundamental factor in the development and progress of humanity. It governs our rhythms of life, our daily routines, our societies, and cultures. It helps us understand our origins and shape our visions of the future.

Activity Title: The Wheel of Time: Building a Collective Timeline

Project Objective:

The objective of this project is for students to research and analyze different significant historical periods and events, understand the various ways of understanding time and periodization, observe the continuities and ruptures of historical processes, identify the sources that originated different forms of recording, and investigate theories about the origin of the American man.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5, and each group will be responsible for a slice of history. The project will be divided into two disciplines: History and Arts.

In the first part of the project, students will research and select important historical events that occurred during the period assigned to them. They should consider significant facts, scientific discoveries, political changes, and cultural events that helped shape that period of time.

In the second part of the project, students will work as a team to create an artistic representation of their period of time on a segment of a large wheel of time that will be built collectively with the other groups. This representation should reflect the different ways of understanding time and periodization that were addressed in the study of that period.

Required Materials:

1. Cardboards for the construction of the wheel of time.
2. Art materials such as colored pencils, paints, brushes, pens, glue, scissors.
3. Books and online resources for historical research.
4. Computer for preparing the report.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Carrying Out the Activity:

1. Each group is assigned a period of time to research. The research should include: identification of significant events and personalities; analysis of continuities and ruptures; the genesis of historical knowledge production and the significance of sources at that time; theories about the origin of man in that period (if applicable).

2. After the research, each group should plan and create an artistic representation of their period of time, which will be added to the collective wheel of time.

3. The groups must present their part of the wheel of time to the rest of the class, explaining their research and the design decisions made in the representation of time.

Project Deliverables:

The project will result in a large wheel of time that will be exhibited at the school. In addition, each group must present a written report covering the following points:

1. Introduction: Contextualization of the period of time studied and explanation of the relevance and application of this study for understanding History.
2. Development: Explanation of the theory and research on significant events and personalities, continuities and ruptures, historical sources, theories about the origin of man (if applicable), the methodology used, and the results obtained from the research and the creation of the artistic representation.
3. Conclusions: Reflections on the learning, challenges encountered, skills developed, and conclusions drawn about the project.
4. Bibliography: Indication of the research and inspiration sources used.

This way, the practical activity and the report complement each other, reinforcing the students' learning and expression. By researching, planning, creating, and communicating their results, students will deepen their understanding of historical time and its representations.
