Mathematics is a universal language, and every year we learn new concepts that help us expand our understanding of the world. Today, we will talk about two of these concepts: multiples and divisors.

Multiples and divisors are concepts that are present in various contexts of our daily lives, even though we may not always perceive them explicitly. Divisors are numbers that divide a larger number without leaving a remainder, while multiples are the results of this division. For example, 3 is a divisor of 9, as 9 divided by 3 leaves no remainder. On the other hand, 9 is a multiple of 3, as it is possible to obtain 9 by multiplying 3 by 3.

Understanding these concepts is essential to progress in many other mathematical topics, including fractions, prime factors, composite and prime numbers, and much more. Moreover, knowing how to find multiples and divisors is a useful skill in many practical situations, including when we need to solve everyday problems.

Theme Importance

Why study multiples and divisors? Well, these concepts are used in a variety of practical applications. For example, if you want to divide a number of objects equally among a group of people, you are looking for a divisor of the number of objects. On the other hand, if you want to know how many objects there are if each person has a specific number of objects, you are looking for a multiple of the number of people.

Furthermore, many areas of science and technology use the concepts of multiples and divisors. Computer programmers use divisors when they create algorithms to distribute tasks equally among processors. Multiples are used in music to determine the frequencies of notes in a scale. And these are just a few examples!

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Building a Wheel of Multiples and Divisors"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to provide students with a fun and practical way to understand the concepts of multiples and divisors, while also encouraging teamwork and problem-solving.

Detailed Project Description

In this project, students will build a "Wheel of Multiples and Divisors." This is a visual tool that will help them understand and work with the concepts of multiples and divisors in a more interactive and engaging way. The project will be carried out by groups of 3 to 5 students and will have a deadline of one month to be completed.

Required Materials

  • Cardboard or paperboard
  • Colored pens
  • Ruler
  • Compass
  • Pencil and eraser

Step-by-Step Guide for the Activity

  1. First, each group must choose a set of numbers to work with. It is suggested that these numbers be smaller than 50 to facilitate the activity.

  2. Using the compass and ruler, students should draw a large circle on the cardboard or paperboard. Inside this circle, they should draw another smaller circle.

  3. Next, students should divide the larger circle into sectors according to the number of divisors of the chosen numbers. Each divisor should be noted in a sector.

  4. The smaller circle should be divided in the same way, but now each sector will represent a multiple of the chosen number.

  5. Finally, students should color and decorate the Wheel of Multiples and Divisors as they prefer.

After completing the practical activity, each group should work on writing a report. The report should follow the following format:

  1. Introduction: Describe the concepts of multiple and divisor and their practical relevance. Also include a description of the project carried out.

  2. Development: Explain in detail the activity performed, from the choice of numbers to the construction of the Wheel of Multiples and Divisors. Also include the theory behind multiples and divisors and discuss how the project helped to better understand these concepts.

  3. Conclusions: Discuss what your group learned from the project. Address both the mathematical knowledge and the socio-emotional skills that were developed during the activity.

  4. Bibliography: List all sources of information that the group used to carry out the project.

This project connects theory with practice, and furthermore, students need to understand the concepts in order to produce the wheel. The report is a way for students to reflect on what they have learned and how they have applied the knowledge gained.
