Contextualization:

The world is full of information that is continuously collected and interpreted to help us understand our society, economy, science, and much more. One of the most effective ways to interpret and communicate this information is through graphs. Graphs are visual representations of data that can help us visualize large amounts of complex information in a very easy-to-understand way.

To better understand what a graph is, we can think of a simple example. Suppose you and your friends decide to record how many goals each of you scores in a week playing soccer. At the end of the week, instead of just listing the results, you can create a bar graph where each bar represents one of you and the height of the bar shows the number of goals. This makes it much easier to see who scored the most goals at a glance.

Introduction to Graphs:

Graphs are a crucial part of mathematical, statistical, and scientific disciplines, as they provide a visual way to represent data and statistics. Graphs use scaled axes to represent the data and can create a clear picture of the data distribution, observable patterns, and unusual trends, if any.

There are several types of graphs that can be used depending on the type of data and what you want to show. This includes line graphs, bar graphs, pie charts, and many others. In this project, we will focus on bar graphs, which are very useful for comparing the frequency of different data categories.

At this point in your school lives, understanding graphs and how to interpret them is a very valuable skill. Not only is it crucial for your math and science subjects, but it is also important in other areas, such as social sciences and even in arts.

Importance of Graphs:

The importance of graphs in the real world is astounding. They are used in almost every field, whether in science, business, politics, education, or health. For example, companies use graphs to visualize their sales, profits, and other business performance measures. Scientists can use graphs to show the results of their research. Politicians use graphs to communicate important data to the public.

The ability to create and interpret graphs is an essential skill in today's world, where we are surrounded by data. Whether seeing the rise and fall of stocks in the stock market, observing the growth of the global population, or tracking climate change, graphs play a fundamental role in our understanding of the world around us.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Building and Interpreting Graphs

Project Objective:

This project aims to provide students with the opportunity to apply their knowledge of graphs in practice, enhancing both their analytical skills and their collaboration, communication, and time management skills. In particular, students will learn to identify variables and their frequencies and to recognize and interpret the main components of a bar graph.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will work in groups of 3 to 5 people and select a topic of interest to collect data. This topic can be anything that interests them, from the amount of recycled waste per week in their homes to the number of goals scored by different players in a soccer season.

Once the data has been collected, students will create a bar graph representing the data and interpret the results.

Required Materials:

  • Paper or graphing software (such as Excel)
  • Colored pens or markers (if the graphs are being drawn by hand)
  • Data to create the graph

Detailed Step-by-Step:

  1. Topic Selection: Each group should choose a topic that is of interest to them and that allows for data collection. This topic must be approved by the teacher before data collection begins.

  2. Data Collection: Groups should collect the necessary data for their chosen topic. Data collection should be carried out over one to two weeks.

  3. Graph Creation: After collecting the data, students should create a bar graph representing the collected data. The graph should include a title, axes, legends, sources, and dates.

  4. Interpretation of Results: Groups should analyze and interpret the results displayed in their graphs. They should discuss any patterns, trends, or interesting results they observe.

  5. Final Report: Groups should write a detailed report that includes all aspects of the project, from the choice of topic to the interpretation of results. This report should be in the format of introduction, development, conclusion, and bibliography.

Project Deliverables:

Each group must deliver:

  1. The hand-drawn bar graph or created in appropriate software.

  2. The final project report, which should include:

    • Introduction: The student should contextualize the theme, its relevance and real-world application as well as the objective of this project.
    • Development: The student should explain the theory behind bar graphs, explain data collection in detail, describe the methodology used to create the graph, present the graph, and discuss the results obtained.
    • Conclusion: The student should conclude the work by summarizing their main points, stating the learnings obtained, and drawing conclusions about the project.
    • Bibliography: The student should indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

The project conclusion and deliverables should reflect teamwork, technical skills acquired, and socio-emotional skills developed throughout the project.
