Welcome to the project 'Sum and Subtraction of Fractions'! Fractions are an integral part of our world and understanding them is essential for a variety of practical applications. Sometimes, it's easy to overlook the relevance of fractions, but they are present in many everyday situations. For example, when dividing a pizza into equal slices or measuring ingredients for a recipe, we are actually working with fractions.

Sum and subtraction are basic operations in Mathematics, but when dealing with fractions, these operations can become a bit more complex. However, there's no need to worry! With the correct understanding and practice, sum and subtraction of fractions can become as familiar as that of whole numbers.

Introduction

In this project, we will delve into the world of fractions, starting with the concept of rational numbers and how fractions are a representation of these numbers. We will also review the concepts of numerator and denominator and their importance in defining a fraction. Additionally, we will explore how to find a common denominator for two or more fractions, a crucial step to perform sum and subtraction operations.

Next, we will explore the operation of summing fractions, defining step by step how to perform this operation with fractions of equal and different denominators. The same will be done for the subtraction operation.

This project aims primarily to develop a solid understanding of sum and subtraction operations with fractions and their application in the real world, as well as to encourage teamwork and efficient time management.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: 'Building the World of Fractions'

Project Objective:

The objective of this project is to understand the sum and subtraction of fractions through a playful approach, applied to the real world, involving the concept of Mathematics and the practice of teamwork, developing socio-emotional skills.

Detailed Project Description:

In this project, students will be challenged to create a 'fraction theme park', where each attraction corresponds to a fraction problem to be solved. Each group of students will have to design and build a miniature model of the park using recyclable materials, cardboard, construction paper, and other creative materials.

The attractions must include at least an 'addition roller coaster', a 'subtraction ferris wheel', and other attractions that students can invent, each with their own operation rules involving fractions.

Each group must create a map of the theme park, with each attraction identified and detailed in terms of sum or subtraction of fractions. 'Challenge' problems should also be developed for visitors to solve in order to 'enjoy' the attractions.

The project should be completed with the creation of a promotional brochure for the park, explaining the concepts of fraction, sum and subtraction of fractions, numerator, denominator, and common denominator. The brochure should also contain the challenge problems.

Required Materials:

Step by Step:

1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students.
2. Research and study the concepts of fractions, sum and subtraction of fractions, and common denominator.
3. Develop ideas for the theme park attractions representing sum and subtraction problems of fractions.
4. Create a map of the theme park with all attractions identified.
5. Build a miniature model of the theme park using recyclable materials, cardboard, and construction paper.
6. Create challenge problems involving sum and subtraction of fractions for each attraction.
7. Create a promotional brochure for the park explaining the concepts of fraction, sum and subtraction of fractions, and how to solve the challenge problems.

Project Deliverables:

At the end of the project, students must present:

1. A miniature model of the theme park.
2. The detailed map of the theme park.
3. The promotional brochure of the park explaining the concepts of fraction, sum and subtraction of fractions, numerator, denominator, and common denominator, as well as the 'operation rules' of each attraction.

Additionally, students must write a WRITTEN DOCUMENT in the form of a report containing the four main topics: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used. In this document, students should detail the process of building the park, the creation of attractions and challenge problems, as well as discuss the results obtained and the application of the studied concepts in solving the challenge problems.
