Introduction

Fractions and decimal numbers are two ways of representing the same thing: rational numbers. Rational numbers are those that can be written as a fraction, where the numerator and denominator are integers and the denominator is different from zero. For example, the rational number 3/4 is a fraction and can also be expressed as the decimal 0.75.

Decimal numbers, in turn, are a way of expressing numbers that are not integers. For example, if you divide 1 in half, you get 0.5, which is a decimal number. In short, fractions and decimal numbers are unique and different ways of representing quantities that are not whole numbers.

The conversion of fractions into decimal numbers and vice versa is a fundamental mathematical skill that helps to better understand the concepts of numbers and operations. Furthermore, this skill is often necessary to solve real-world and everyday problems. For example, cooking recipes often use fractions to express quantities, while banking operations, shopping, and sales often use decimal numbers.

Context

Fractions and decimal numbers are present in numerous aspects of our daily lives. A car trip, for example, can be a great opportunity to understand the conversion between fractions and decimals. When we look at the car's speedometer, we see that the speed is presented in whole numbers, but what happens if the car is moving at a speed that is not a whole number? We use decimals to express that speed.

Similarly, in a cooking recipe, if we want to make half of a recipe that calls for 1/3 cup of sugar, we need to convert that fraction to a decimal in order to use a measuring cup with decimal markings. Therefore, understanding how to convert fractions into decimal numbers and vice versa is a valuable skill that goes beyond the classroom and finds application in many aspects of our daily lives.

Practical Activity - 'Decimal Adventure'

Project Objective:

Develop the understanding of rational numbers, through the conversion of fractions to decimal numbers and vice versa, using an 'adventure' scenario to promote engagement and collaboration among students.

Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 and will receive a 'Decimal Adventure Map', which will be a sequence of mathematical problems involving the conversion of fractions to decimal numbers and vice versa. Each problem solved correctly will take them to the next stage of the adventure. During this journey, students will have to record their discoveries and reflect on the strategies used, collaborating to solve the problems.

Required Materials:

  • Decimal Adventure Map (provided by the teacher)
  • Paper and pencil to record the steps and conclusions
  • Calculators (optional)

Step by Step:

  1. Formation of groups and distribution of the 'Decimal Adventure Map'.

  2. Guide students to carefully read each problem, discuss how to solve it within the group, and record the solutions.

  3. Encourage students to discuss and document the strategies used to solve the problems.

  4. At the end of the 'adventure', students should gather to reflect on the experience and organize their discoveries and conclusions cohesively in a report.

Project Deliverables:

To complete the activity, each group must submit a detailed report following the structure below:

Introduction

Provide context for the theme and explain the project's objective. Show the relevance of learning about fractions and decimal numbers and their real-world applications.

Development

In this section, students must record all stages of the 'adventure', explain the strategies used to solve the problems, discuss the difficulties encountered, and how they were overcome. It is important to include the mathematical problems and their respective solutions.

Conclusions

Here, students must conclude the work by summarizing their main points, explaining the learning obtained, and the conclusions drawn about the project. Each group should reflect on how they worked as a team, the importance of collaboration, time management, and how they solved problems together.

Bibliography

Students should indicate the sources that helped them in the project, such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

This report will not only assess students' mathematical knowledge but also collaboration, problem-solving skills, creativity, and communication within the groups. It is important to remember that the project lasts for one month, providing enough time for execution and report preparation.

This playful and engaging project will help students gain a deeper understanding of rational numbers, fractions, and decimal numbers while developing important social and emotional skills.
