Decimal System

Contextualization

The Decimal System is a way of representing numbers that we have. It is composed of ten distinct digits, from 0 to 9, and it is of incalculable importance for our daily life. Whether to calculate the average of a subject in school, the change of a purchase in the supermarket or the amount of ingredients in a recipe, the decimal system is present. It is true to say that without it, our life would be much more difficult.

The basis for understanding this system lies in the concepts of order and class. The digits of the decimal system, when organized to represent a number, have a specific order and class that determine their value. For example, in the number 123, digit 1 represents the hundred, 2 the ten and 3 the unit. In the number 1.23, 1 represents the unit, 2 the tenth and 3 the hundredth.

Although the decimal system seems simple, it has an inherent complexity that can be explored in many ways. On the one hand, it allows us to represent a great variety of numbers, both natural and decimal, in a concise way. On the other hand, it forces us to consider the positions of the digits and their respective classes to really understand the value they represent.

Importance of the Decimal System

Mathematics is a universal language and the Decimal System is one of its main pillars. Without it, for example, it would be impossible to carry out most of the commercial transactions we make daily. We could not even express the time of day accurately, since we use minutes and seconds to subdivide hours.

Moreover, the Decimal System is also essential for the exact and technological sciences. It is the basis for computer programming and for most scientific calculations. Without a solid understanding of this system, it would be impossible to advance in these areas.

Practical Activity: Decimal City

Project Objective

The objective of this activity is to use creativity and teamwork to build a city entirely based on the Decimal System. Students should apply the principles of this system to build a city on paper, using resources such as colored paper, pens, colored pencils, ruler and glue.

Detailed project description

In groups of 3 to 5, students will build a model of a city based on the Decimal System. Each element of the city (buildings, streets, leisure areas, etc.) must be mapped and have its value defined according to the Decimal System.

For example, a building can have 10 floors, each floor corresponding to a digit (0 to 9). The streets of the city can be organized into 10 blocks, and each block can have 10 streets. A park can have 10 trees, each representing a digit. Another example could be a street named "Street 0.1", which indicates that it is the first of the ten streets.

A city should be divided into ten sectors and each sector will have a specific theme related to a decimal value assigned to it. For example, the city's school can be located in sector 0.2, the hospital in sector 0.4, and so on.

Required materials

  1. Cardboard or styrofoam board for the city base
  2. Colored paper, pens, colored pencils
  3. Scissors, glue

Detailed step by step to carry out the activity

  1. Each group should start planning their city. What elements will the city have? Where will each element be located? What decimal value will each element represent?
  2. After planning, students can start building the city using the materials available. They should focus on maintaining the correct proportion and decimal representation.
  3. After construction, each group should make a presentation of their city to the class, explaining the concepts of the Decimal System that were applied.

Project Delivery

At the end of the project, each group must deliver the model of the city together with a report detailing the development of the project.

  • Introduction: They should contextualize the theme, its relevance and application in the real world as well as the objective of this project.
  • Development: It should explain the theory of the Decimal System, explain the activity in detail, indicate the methodology used for the construction of the city and finally present and discuss the elements of the city and how the Decimal System was applied to them.
  • Conclusion: They should return to their main points, explaining the lessons learned and the conclusions drawn about the project.
  • Bibliography: Indicate the sources on which they relied to work on the project as books, web pages, videos, etc.

This project allows students to explore and understand the Decimal System in a fun and practical way, while developing technical and socio-emotional skills.
