Let's embark on a journey through the wonderful world of decimals! You might ask yourself: "Why are decimal numbers so important?" Well, decimal numbers are present in almost every aspect of our daily lives. They allow us to make precise measurements, understand prices, calculate probabilities, and much more. Therefore, it is essential to understand the concept of decimals and the operations related to them so that we can apply them in various real-life situations.

Decimals are an extension of the number system we have, introducing fractions into our base-10 numerical system. They use a comma (or period, depending on the country) to divide a whole number into smaller parts. For example, the number 1.5 represents one whole number plus half of another whole number. Because they are so precise, decimals are an essential tool in many areas, from physics and engineering to economics and accounting.

Operations with decimals, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, follow the same basic rules as operations with integers. However, one must be careful with the position of the comma (or decimal point). For example, adding 1.2 (one whole number and two tenths) to 0.8 (eight tenths) results in 2 (two whole numbers), while multiplying 1.2 by 0.8 results in 0.96, which is less than either of the numbers we multiplied! This may seem strange at first, but as we work with decimals, these operations make more and more sense.

Imagine carrying a pocket full of pennies to pay for a snack! That would be both inconvenient and impractical. Thanks to the decimal system, we can express money quantities in a concise and easy-to-understand way. When you look at the price of a product or service, you see decimal numbers in action.

Moreover, decimal numbers are the basis for understanding measurements, such as size and weight, and for performing calculations in science and engineering. When you measure distance in meters or temperature in degrees Celsius, you often use decimal numbers. Additionally, much of the information we find in charts and tables, such as interest rates or growth percentages, is expressed as decimals.

Decimal numbers play a crucial role in various professions, from chefs measuring ingredients to engineers calculating the strength of a bridge. They are also indispensable in many everyday activities, such as managing money or following a recipe.

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to apply the knowledge of operations with decimals in a realistic context and understand the importance of using decimals in everyday situations. Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5, will create and manage a virtual candy store.

Detailed Project Description

In this project, each group will be responsible for "opening" a candy store, where they will have to deal with a variety of tasks involving the use of decimals. Students will have to determine the prices of their candies, calculate costs, profits, discounts, taxes, etc. All of this using operations with decimal numbers.

Necessary Materials

  1. Paper and pen for initial sketches.
  2. Calculator (optional).
  3. Internet access for research.
  4. Spreadsheet program (Excel, Google Sheets, etc.) for creating spreadsheets.

Detailed Activity Steps

  1. Store Planning: Groups must decide which types of candy will be sold in the store, as well as their quantities and unit costs. Each price must be a decimal number.
  2. Price Determination: Students must then determine a selling price for each candy, making sure to cover the cost and include a reasonable profit margin.
  3. Total Cost Calculation: Groups must calculate the total cost of the candies by adding all unit costs. They must also calculate the total sum of the selling prices.
  4. Sales Simulation: Each group must simulate the sale of a specific quantity of candies, subtracting the quantity sold from the total quantity available. They must record the revenues (price x quantity sold).
  5. Profit Calculation: Profit must be calculated by subtracting the total cost from the revenues.
  6. Discount Application: After that, groups must apply a discount on some candies and calculate the new selling price. They must also recalculate the revenues and profit considering the new prices.
  7. Tax Calculation: Finally, groups must calculate the tax amount (a percentage on revenues) and deduct it from the profit.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, each group must produce a report with the following components:

  1. Introduction: Brief description of the candy store and the activity's relevance. The group must also explain the importance of using decimal numbers in everyday life, especially in commerce, and how this connects to the project carried out.
  2. Development: Detailed description of all project steps and the decisions made in each of them. Here, students must also explain the operations performed with decimal numbers, present the calculations made, discuss the results obtained, and indicate the methodology used.
  3. Conclusions: The group must summarize the main points of the work, explain the learnings obtained, what they understood about operations with decimals, and their conclusions about the activity.
  4. Bibliography: Indication of the sources used for the project, such as websites, books, videos, etc.

Remember, the success of the store is not only measured by profits but also by the ability to plan, work in a team, solve problems, and apply mathematical knowledge. Thus, in this activity, students will learn not only to work with decimals but also to use these skills in a practical and fun context.
