First of all, let's understand what divisibility criteria are. In mathematics, divisibility criteria are shortcuts used to determine if a number is divisible by another number without having to perform the division. We can verify if a number is divisible by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, or 10 by applying simple and practical rules.

For example, a number is divisible by 2 if the digit in its unit place is even, by 5 if the digit in its unit place is 0 or 5, and by 10 if it ends in 0. With 3 and 9, we check divisibility by summing the digits of the number and checking if the result is divisible by 3 or 9, respectively. With 4 and 6, we have less trivial rules.

Now that you already know the divisibility criteria, how are they determined? Well, this is a result of our number base, which is 10. In other bases, divisibility criteria would be different. This is, in part, what mathematicians study in number theory.

Contextualization

Why is it important to understand divisibility criteria? They are extremely useful in many everyday situations, such as dividing a bill at a restaurant or checking change at the supermarket. Additionally, they are also fundamental in various areas of mathematics, such as algebra, number theory, and cryptography.

Understanding divisibility criteria develops logical and mathematical reasoning, the ability to solve problems, and efficiency in dealing with numbers in general. Moreover, these skills are essential for various fields of Science, Engineering, and Technology.

Activity Title: "Divisibility Game"

Project Objectives

  1. Understand and apply divisibility criteria.

  3. Work in a team, delegating tasks and responsibilities to create an educational game.

Detailed Project Description

Each group of students will be responsible for creating a "Divisibility Game," a board game aimed at teaching and testing the understanding of divisibility criteria. Each board must be constructed in a way that players need to use these criteria to advance or retreat in the game. The groups will also be responsible for writing the game rules and presenting it to the class.

Required Materials

  • Cardboard or cardstock for the base of the board.
  • Colored paper, markers, colored pencils, glue, scissors, ruler, etc. for the decoration of the board and game pieces.
  • Dice or a mobile app that simulates dice rolling.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Start the project by researching divisibility criteria and how they are used. Use the recommended resources presented in the introduction of this project.
  2. Next, hold a brainstorming session with your group to decide the game structure: how players will move through the board, how divisibility criteria will be used, and what the rules will be.
  3. Divide tasks among group members to start creating the board and game pieces. Each group can customize their game as they wish, as long as it aligns with the project's objective.
  4. After creating the game, test it among group members to ensure everything works as expected and the rules are clear.
