Context

In this project, we are going to learn about flowcharts, which are graphical representations that illustrate the steps of a process. We will understand how they work, what purpose they serve, and how they can help us to better understand everyday or professional situations.

Flowcharts are used in various areas of knowledge, such as mathematics, computer science, administration, engineering, and others. A flowchart allows anyone to understand a process in a simplified way, making visualization more practical and clear.

Through the use of graphical symbols, a flowchart represents the sequence of a process, showing, for example, the steps to achieve a result in a mathematical operation, the commands in a software, or even the possible paths in a game. In mathematics, flowcharts allow the visualization of procedures and the understanding of the logical sequence for problem solving.

In the real world, flowcharts are extremely useful tools. When planning a trip, for example, it can be used to organize the itinerary, showing the various possibilities of the route. In a company, the flowchart can represent the hierarchy of positions or the production process, making it easier for employees to understand.

Flowcharts are also essential in the area of computer science. Computer programs are based on flowcharts to organize the actions to be performed. By understanding a flowchart, it is possible to understand how a computer program works behind the scenes.

Hands-on Activity: "Flowchart Creation and Interpretation"

Project Objective

To learn how to develop and interpret simple flowcharts while promoting group collaboration and stimulating essential skills such as time management, communication, problem-solving and creative thinking.

Detailed Project Description

Students, organized in groups of 3 to 5, will have to develop and interpret flowcharts based on everyday situations or everyday problems. Each group should choose two situations that can be solved or illustrated through flowcharts. In addition to creating the flowchart, the group will have to write a four-part report: Introduction, Development, Conclusions and Bibliography.

Required Materials

  • Paper and pencil or software for flowchart creation (such as Microsoft Visio, Google Drawings or draw.io)
  • Books or online research resources, such as those suggested in the contextualization.

Detailed Step by Step to Carry Out the Activity

  1. Students should form groups of 3 to 5 members.
  2. Each group should select two everyday situations or problems that can be solved or illustrated through flowcharts. The complexity of the situations should be appropriate for the students' level.
  3. Students should research how to draw and interpret a flowchart, using the suggested resources or other sources of their choice.
  4. Each group should create a flowchart for each of the chosen situations. It is important that the flowcharts are clear and make sense.
  5. At the end of the practical activity, each group must prepare a report containing the following topics:
    • Introduction: Describing the situations chosen, the relevance of the flowcharts and the project's objectives.
    • Development: Explaining how the flowcharts were created, the theory behind the flowchart design, the methodology used and the results achieved.
    • Conclusion: Learnings, key points and conclusion about the project.
    • Bibliography: References from the sources consulted during the project.
  6. The project will last for one month and the students must organize themselves to complete the steps in the expected time.

Project Deliverables

The project deliverables should consist of a written document (the report) and the two flowcharts developed. The flowcharts can be attached to the report or submitted separately, in physical or digital format.

In the report, students should describe the process of developing their flowcharts, as well as the logic behind each step represented. It is also important that they explain the application of the theoretical concepts they learned during the course when creating the flowcharts and how this activity contributed to the development of their socio-emotional skills.

Thus, the students will have the opportunity to reflect on the practical application of the theoretical concepts, developing critical thinking skills, the ability to analyze and synthesize, and written communication skills.
