Contextualization
The interpretation of mathematical data is an essential ability in the world we live in today. All the time, whether on television, on the internet, in the newspaper or in magazines, we come across data presented in different ways: tables, graphs, percentages, among others. This information is produced to help us understand realities such as the country's economy, the spread of a disease, the population's eating habits, among many others.
It is very important that we have the ability to interpret this data correctly, both to understand what it tells us about the world, and to be able to make decisions based on it. From choosing which neighborhood to live in, to assessing which product on sale is worth buying the most, to the decision to vote for a certain candidate - all of these are practical examples of situations in which data interpretation can be useful.
Introduction
Understanding numbers and statistics is just the first step in interpreting data. The next step is to understand how these numbers relate to each other and what this relationship tells us. For example, if we have the data on how much each person in a city earns and how much each one spends, we can draw important conclusions, such as the average savings capacity of the inhabitants of that city, or what percentage of their income people spend on housing, food, among others.
A more in-depth analysis of the data also allows us to make comparisons, predictions and even identify possible problems and seek their solutions. For example, if we perceive through the data that the consumption of a certain natural resource is growing at a speed that will make it scarce soon, we can seek ways to use this resource more rationally or even replace it with some sustainable alternative.
In this sense, data interpretation goes far beyond mathematical knowledge, also involving critical thinking, logical reasoning and problem-solving skills. Developing these skills is the main objective of this project, through a fun and engaging activity that simulates real-world situations.
Practical Activity: "Interpreting Data in Our World"
Project Objective
The objective of this project is to develop data interpretation skills, practice teamwork and apply mathematical knowledge in a real and meaningful context.
Project Description
Each group will be responsible for conducting a survey on a chosen topic, collecting relevant data, organizing it into graphs and tables and, finally, interpreting this data and drawing conclusions. The topics can be varied, such as water consumption in the city, air quality, unemployment rate, amount of green areas, etc.
Necessary Materials
- Computers with internet access for data research.
- Material for making graphs and tables (paper, ruler, colored pencils, etc., or specific software).
Step by Step to Carry Out the Activity
- Form groups of 3 to 5 students.
- Each group chooses a theme for the research, which must be approved by the teacher.
- Conduct an internet search to collect data on the chosen topic.
- Organize the data collected in tables and graphs of different types (pie, columns, bars, line, etc.)
- Interpret the graphs and tables, recognizing patterns, making comparisons and drawing conclusions.
- Write a project report, following the structure of Introduction, Development, Conclusion and Bibliography.
Project Deliverables
Written Report
The written report must follow the following structure:

Introduction: In this section, students must present the topic chosen for the research, explain why it is important and what questions they intend to answer with the research.

Development: Here, students must explain the research methodology used, how the data was collected and organized. The graphs and tables produced must be presented in detail, explaining what each of them represents. Then, students must present the interpretation of the data, explaining what it revealed about the topic researched.

Conclusion: Students should conclude the work by revisiting their main points, explaining what they learned and the conclusions drawn from the project.

Bibliography: Students must indicate all the sources from which they obtained the data for the research, following ABNT standards.
The written report must be submitted by the last day of the month following the start of the project.
Presentation
Each group must prepare a 15 to 20-minute presentation for the class, where they will explain the chosen topic, show the data collected and share the conclusions they reached. Each member of the group must actively participate in the presentation.
