Setting the Stage
Math is everywhere around us, in every place we look, in every situation we face, and even in the moments we don’t realize. As such, studying mathematics goes far beyond just solving equations; it is about developing logical thinking, sharpening problem-solving skills, and ultimately understanding how the world functions. In this project, we will focus on a foundational pillar that allows us to do all of these things: Properties of Operations.
Arithmetic operations are the building blocks of mathematics. Within them lie the four basic operations we are all familiar with: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Each of these operations has special properties that enable us to manipulate them in various ways to solve problems. These properties are rules that help us understand how operations work, and in this journey, we will focus on the commutative, associative, distributive, and identity properties.
Comprehending these properties is paramount to understanding how to work with numbers and mathematical expressions. They allow us to understand what transformations we can make without affecting the outcome. For example, the commutative property tells us that the order of numbers in addition and multiplication doesn’t change the result, whereas the distributive property helps simplify expressions, making calculations easier.
Significance and Applicability
So why is it important to understand the properties of operations? For starters, they are essential tools for comprehending and solving more complex mathematical problems. Additionally, many of these properties find applications in our daily routines, even if we don’t realize it. For example, when sharing a pizza equally among friends or calculating the change after a purchase, we are using properties of division.
Furthermore, the properties of operations are foundational concepts in multiple STEM fields such as physics and engineering, where equations and formulas are often manipulated to arrive at solutions. In computer science, these properties are used to optimize algorithms, facilitating more efficient calculations.
To help you with this project, here are a few credible sources to get you started on your research:
- Elementary School: Properties of Operations: A thorough article explaining the properties of operations with real-life examples.
- Portal da Matemática OBMEP: A platform developed by the Brazilian Mathematical Olympiad for Public Schools that provides a full module on properties of operations.

The Hands-on Activity - “Mastering Properties of Operations with a Card Game.”
The next phase of our project involves a hands-on activity that will challenge your creativity, teamwork, communication skills, and - of course - your grasp of the properties of operations we have been studying.
Project Goal
The purpose of this activity is to reinforce students’ understanding of the properties of operations by designing and implementing a card game that revolves around these properties.
Detailed Project Description
Students will be divided into groups of 3-5. Together, they will create a card game that is based on the properties of operations. Card games are a great medium because they have clear rules, are easy to follow, and allow for mathematical operations to be included in a fun and engaging way.
The game should require the player to apply at least four of the different properties of operations in order to win. They may need to use one property to solve a challenge, use another property to gain points, etc. To make the game even more engaging, students should incorporate elements from other subject areas such as geography, history, or science.
Materials Required
- Card stock
- Colorful markers
- Ruler
- Scissors
- Envelopes (for storing cards)
- Dice (optional)
Step-by-Step Instructions for Carrying Out the Activity
- Research: Conduct research on different types of card games, especially ones that incorporate mathematical skills. This will give you inspiration for your own design. Also, research how the properties of operations are used in real-world applications.
- Planning: Outline your game. Describe how it will work, what the rules are, how players win, and how the properties of operations will be utilized. Also, plan how you will incorporate elements from other disciplines.
- Card Design: Design your cards. They should be clear, visually appealing, and easy to comprehend. Remember to include clear instructions on how each card is to be used.
- Production: Using your available materials, produce the card game as per your plan. Be creative in your use of materials.
- Testing: Playtest your game within your group and make any necessary revisions.
- Presentation: Prepare a presentation for the class that showcases how your game works. Include demonstrations of how the properties of operations are used throughout the gameplay.
Project Deliverables
In addition to the final physical card game, each group will submit a written report about their project. The report should have the following sections: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.
In the Introduction, the group should provide context on the topic of properties of operations, their applicability, and the rationale for choosing the game they designed.
In the Development, the group should detail the theory behind the properties of operations, explain their hands-on activity in detail, outline the methodology they employed, and finally discuss the findings.
In the Conclusion, the group should revisit the main points of their work, explaining what they learned and any final thoughts on the project.
In the Bibliography, the group should list any sources they used in the development of their project, including books, websites, videos, etc.
Students should expect to spend 12+ hours on this project, which incorporates technical skills, such as problem-solving and manipulating operations, and soft skills, such as time management, communication, and teamwork.
We hope this project deepens your understanding of properties of operations while providing an enriching and fun learning experience.
