These operations consist of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division and are used in all fields of mathematics, from the simplest to the most complex.

Addition is the most basic and intuitive operation, but also the most used. It represents the joining of two or more numbers. Subtraction is the inverse of addition, representing the removal of one number from another. Multiplication is an addition of several equal numbers and, conversely, division is the partitioning of a number into several equal parts.

Natural numbers are the first ones we learn in school and, together with their operations, form the basis for all our future study of mathematics. Without understanding numbers and how to operate them, it would be difficult to delve into any other area of mathematics.

Mathematical operations are an intrinsic part of our daily lives. Whether counting change, dividing a pizza among friends, or calculating the duration of a movie, we constantly use mathematical operations in our daily lives. Understanding how to perform these operations efficiently and accurately is an essential skill that we all must possess.

In an increasingly technological and number-based world, mastering these basic operations becomes even more essential. Whether in the field of science, technology, engineering, or even in business, the ability to perform operations with natural numbers is a powerful tool that can open up a world of possibilities.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Mathematics in the Supermarket: Operations with Natural Numbers"

Project Objective:

The objective of this project is the application of fundamental concepts of mathematical operations with natural numbers (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) in a practical scenario clearly related to everyday life: a supermarket. Through this activity, students will demonstrate the value and application of basic mathematical operations in everyday situations.

Detailed Project Description:

Groups will be responsible for setting up a "supermarket" in the classroom. Each group must select 10 to 15 different items to "sell" in their store. Each item must be assigned a price in natural numbers. The prices of the items should vary, encouraging the use of different mathematical operations.

Once the "supermarket" is established, groups should take turns "buying" and "selling" items to each other. The "purchase" must be made using mathematical operations to determine the total cost of the selected items and the change to receive.

After the end of the practical activity, groups should gather to discuss their experiences. What challenges did they face? What strategies did they use to solve problems? How did they apply the knowledge of mathematical operations?

Required Materials:

  • Various items to "sell" in the supermarket (can be printed images, real objects, etc.)
  • Fake money notes.
  • Calculators (optional)

Step by Step:

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Each group must select 10-15 items they want to "sell" in their supermarket and assign prices to the items.
