Context

The world around us is full of measures. Whether we check the time on the clock, weigh ourselves on the scale, or measure the amount of ingredients to make a cake, we are dealing with different types of measures. Measures are essential to understand and interact with the world around us.

In this project, we will explore the topic 'Issues with Measures,' an essential part of applied mathematics in our daily lives. We will work with various quantities such as length, mass, time, temperature, area, capacity, and volume. Our goal is to understand how these quantities are used and how we can solve problems involving these measures.

Real-World Applications

Measures are essential in various areas of human life. In the field of architecture and design, for example, measures are fundamental for creating house and building plans. Without precise knowledge of measures, it would be impossible to build a safe and functional house.

In the culinary field, measures are equally important. Whether measuring the amount of flour to make bread or the amount of water to cook rice, we are constantly resorting to measures.

In medicine, measures are crucial for the accuracy of diagnoses and treatments. Doctors rely on precise measures for prescribing medications, conducting exams, and even in surgeries.

Our understanding and effective use of measures, therefore, have great application in the real world, impacting various spheres of our lives.

Practical Activity: Measures in Cooking

Project Objective

This project aims to explore the importance and application of measures in the context of cooking. Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, will identify the different units of measure involved in a recipe of their choice, prepare the recipe, and adjust the quantities for a different number of servings.

Detailed Project Description

  1. Recipe Selection: each group must select a cooking recipe that involves different types of measures (length, mass, time, temperature, volume), preferably with solid and liquid ingredients.

  2. Recipe Interpretation: students should identify and list all units of measure present in the recipe, as well as the instruments used to measure them (spoons, cups, scale, etc).

  3. Recipe Preparation: the groups will prepare the recipe, noting any difficulties or relevant observations during the execution.

  4. Quantity Adjustment: students should rewrite the recipe adjusting the quantities to serve a larger number of people (we suggest doubling the number of servings). They must make the necessary conversions and calculations to adjust the quantities and times.

  5. Final Report: Each group must write a detailed report, describing the process, difficulties encountered, conversions made, and lessons learned in the project.

Required Materials

  • The chosen cooking recipe.
  • The necessary ingredients for the recipe.
  • Measuring instruments (spoons, cups, scale, etc).
  • Stove, pots, and other utensils and equipment necessary for recipe execution.

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Divide into groups of 3 to 5 students.

  2. Select the cooking recipe that everyone in the group agrees to make. Make sure the recipe involves different types of measures.

  3. Identify and list all units of measure present in the recipe and the instruments used to measure them.

  4. Prepare the recipe, following all steps. Note any difficulties or observations during the execution.

  5. After completing the recipe, rewrite it for a larger number of servings. Make the necessary conversions and calculations to adjust the quantities and times.

  6. Finish with a final report, describing the process, difficulties encountered, conversions made, and lessons learned during the project execution. This report should have four main parts:

    • Introduction: contextualize the importance of measures in cooking and the project's objective.

    • Development: Describe the theory behind the measures used (length, mass, time, temperature, volume), explain the activity in detail, indicate the methodology used, present and discuss the results obtained.

    • Conclusion: Summarize important points, explaining the learnings obtained and the conclusions drawn from the project.

    • Bibliography: Indicate the sources you relied on to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.
