Fractions are an important part of mathematics and are used to represent parts or divisions of a whole. Combinations of fractions through mathematical operations such as multiplication and division are used in various everyday situations, such as dividing a pizza, making a cake recipe, or calculating the distance traveled in a race. It is essential to learn how to operate with fractions, as they are the basis for understanding more complex mathematical concepts and are used in many calculations and equations.

Multiplication and division of fractions are essential topics in mathematics that become increasingly relevant as we advance in our studies. These operations are used in a variety of contexts, from simple everyday applications to advanced concepts such as proportions, ratios, and percentages. Understanding and practicing multiplication and division of fractions will help develop problem-solving skills and logical reasoning.

Introduction

Multiplying fractions is a simple operation that involves multiplying numerators (the top number of the fraction) to get the numerator of the answer and multiplying denominators (the bottom number of the fraction) to get the denominator of the answer. For example, multiplying the fractions 1/2 and 3/4 would be (13)/(24) = 3/8.

Dividing fractions, also known as 'rational division,' is a bit more complicated. To divide fractions, you need to 'multiply by the reciprocal.' This means you take the second fraction (the divisor), invert it (denominator becomes numerator and vice versa), and then multiply the two fractions. For example, dividing the fractions 3/4 by 2/3 would be (3/4) / (2/3) = (3/4) * (3/2) = 9/8.

Practical Activity: 'Operating Fractions in a World of Pizzas'

Project Objective

The objective is to help students understand the multiplication and division of fractions through a practical and playful activity, applying the concepts learned to solve real-world problems. The activity also aims to encourage teamwork, communication, and problem-solving among students.

Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people and will create a 'pizzeria' in the classroom. To do this, they will use colored papers to represent different pizza flavors and then divide and multiply the 'pizzas' according to the orders of the 'customers' (represented by the teachers).

Required Materials

  • Colored paper sheets
  • Scissors
  • Pencils and erasers
  • Ruler
  • Markers

Step by Step

  1. Each group will receive several colored paper sheets that will represent pizzas of different flavors. They will have to divide each paper (pizza) into 8 equal pieces, representing 8/8 of a whole pizza.

  2. The teachers, representing the customers, will place pizza orders such as 'I would like 1/2 pizza of mozzarella and 1/4 pizza of pepperoni.' Students will have to use their knowledge of fractions to cut the correct amount of each pizza flavor.

  3. In addition, teachers may request more complex orders involving the multiplication of fractions. For example, 'I would like three times 1/4 pizza of tuna.' In this case, students will have to multiply 3/1 by 1/4 to get the correct amount of tuna pizza.

  4. At the end of the activity, each group will have to write a 'Sales Report' where they will record all orders placed, the fractions used, and the operations performed. This report will help solidify theoretical concepts in practice and understand the importance of fractions in everyday life.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the activity, students will have to deliver the following:

  1. Set of made pizzas: students must present all the pizzas they made and cut during the activity.

  2. Sales Report: a document that reports all sales made at the pizzeria. This document should be divided into four parts: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.

  • In the Introduction, students must explain the activity, its objective, and how fractions operations apply in the real world, specifically in pizza sales.

  • In the Development, they must detail the operations performed (multiplications and divisions of fractions) to meet customer orders, including the methodology used (how they decided how many pieces of each flavor to cut) and the results obtained (final fractions of each pizza flavor).

  • In the Conclusions, students must reflect on the importance of fraction knowledge in solving everyday problems and the lessons learned from the project.

  • In the Bibliography, the resources used for learning and executing the project, such as books, web pages, videos, among others, must be included.
