Powers are a fundamental mathematical operation that refers to the multiplication of a number by itself a specific number of times. Originally, this operation was created to simplify the calculation of successive multiplications of the same number. However, powers are not just a simplification tool for complex calculations, they are an essential basis for several fields of mathematics, science and engineering.

In our daily lives, powers appear in several contexts, from the simplest to the most complex. Whether when calculating the area of a square, when determining the velocity of a car that is constantly accelerating or even when calculating compound interest. In all of these examples, powers are a fundamental tool.

Therefore, delving into the study of powers and their applications allows not only a better understanding of the most basic mathematical operations, but also forms a solid basis for more advanced problems and practical applications.

It is known that, in many situations, mathematics may seem disconnected from everyday reality. However, powers have practical applications in several areas of knowledge. Whether for calculating the speed of a car, the area of a piece of land or the growth rate of a population, powers are the key to understanding several phenomena.

That is why exploring this topic is so important. In addition to that, the study of powers is intrinsically linked to the development of logical reasoning and the ability to solve complex problems.

Practical Activity: "Power in Action: How Math Helps us in our Daily Lives"

Project Goal

This project's main goal is the practical understanding of the concept of powers and their many applications in the real context. We also want to encourage collaboration and teamwork by stimulating communication, planning and task division, always aligning with the project's core theme: Powers.

Project Description

This is a project to be developed by groups of 3 to 5 students. These groups will be responsible for creating a mini math fair, where each booth will be a challenge involving powers. Each booth must address one of the themes involving powers: Calculations, Practical Problems, Theory, Applications in Nature and Games.

The groups must research about the themes, develop the booth with interactive activities and present it to the other students. This project must last for at least 12 hours per participating student, from research, preparation, application to the final report.

Required Materials

  1. Computer with internet access for pesquisa.
  2. Math textbooks.
  3. Materials for building the booths (cardboard, paints, paper, glue, etc).
  4. Calculators (if necessary).

Step by step

  1. Group formation: Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members.

  2. Choosing the booth theme: Each group will choose one of the themes (Calculations, Practical Problems, Theory, Applications in Nature and Games) to develop their booth.

  3. Research and preparation: The groups will conduct research on the chosen theme, prepare interactive activities for the booth contextualizing the use of powers.

  4. Building the booth: Using the materials available, the students must create an interactive booth to present the power concept in the chosen context.

  5. Booth presentation: The groups will make a presentation to the other students, where they will explain the concept of powers in the context of the booth, propose practical activities and answer questions.

  6. Booth evaluation: The groups will visit other booths and participate in the proposed activities.

  7. Final Report: Each group will make a report on the project, including: Introduction, Activity Development, Conclusions and Bibliography used.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, the groups must deliver:

  1. Interactive Booth: This must be a place where the concept of powers is explained in an easy-to-understand and interesting way.

  2. Practical Activity in the booth: Each booth must have a practical and interactive activity related to the chosen theme. This activity serves to reinforce the concept of powers within the chosen context.

  3. Final Report: The final report must be composed of four main parts: Introduction, Development, Conclusions and Bibliography used. The introduction must contextualize the booth theme and its relevance. The development must explain the activity in detail, indicate the methodology used and finally present and discuss the results obtained. In the conclusion, the students must explain the lessons learned and the conclusions drawn about the project. The bibliography must contain all the sources of information used during the project.

This report structure not only stimulates writing and expression of ideas of the students, but also helps to develop a critical sense, reflection on the theme studied and contextualization of mathematics in our daily lives.
