A line extends indefinitely in both directions. A ray is a little different: it extends indefinitely in only one direction. And if we take a piece of a line, with a starting point and an endpoint, we have what we call a line segment. These concepts are very important in Mathematics, and you'll soon understand why.
To really grasp how these characteristics work and how they apply, we're going to do a fun, hands-on activity! Remember, the goal of this project is not only to learn the concepts but also to collaborate and work as a team. So get ready for a learning journey filled with discovery and enjoyment!

Why do we need to learn about lines, rays, and line segments? They're everywhere! In architecture, straight lines are commonly used to create the geometric shapes that make up buildings. Lines, rays, and line segments are used in more advanced mathematics, like Algebra, and they're fundamental in Geometry. Project Goal
In this activity, you will work in groups of 3 to 5 students to explore and understand the concept of lines, rays, and line segments. We'll use art, creativity, and technology to better grasp these concepts!
Project Description
The project consists of creating a mural representing the concepts of lines, rays, and line segments. To do this, each group will create drawings using only these geometric shapes and explain, through a report, how these concepts were applied. In addition, the mural must be scanned (using a photo or scanner app) and organized into a digital file, to be shared with the class.
This project will last one week, with an average of two to four hours of work per student.
Required Materials
- A3 sheets of paper or cardboard
- Pens, colored pencils, or markers
- Ruler, set square, and compass
- Camera or cell phone to scan the work
- Computer to prepare the report and the digital file of the mural
Project Step-by-Step
- Forming Groups: Form a group of 3 to 5 students.
- Planning: Have an initial discussion to fully understand the concepts of lines, rays, and line segments. Decide together what you will draw on the mural.
- Creating the Mural: With the planning in hand, it's time to draw! Remember to use only lines, rays, and line segments in your drawings.
- Scanning the Mural: After completing the drawing, scan the mural using a camera or scanner app.
- Preparing the Report: Prepare a report explaining the project. Describe the drawings, explaining how the concepts of lines, rays, and line segments were applied.
- Preparing the Digital File: Organize the scanned mural and the report file into a digital folder to be shared with the class.
Project Submission
Upon completion of the project, each group must submit:
- The scanned mural.
- The written report, containing the following topics:

- Conclusion: Summarize the main points of the project, highlighting what you have learned and what conclusions you have drawn about the project.
- Bibliography: List the sources you used to work on the project (books, web pages, videos, etc.).
