Mathematics is a universal language, present in all spheres of our lives, from the most complex technologies to simple daily activities. One of the most basic and fundamental themes in Mathematics is the study of operations with natural numbers. The fundamental operations, which are addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, are the basis for the development of more complex reasoning in Mathematics. Therefore, this project aims to deepen students' understanding of the theme 'Operations with natural numbers'.

It is important to remember that natural numbers are those we use to count objects, that is, they are positive integers starting from zero. They are the basis of the counting system, and without them, it would be impossible to perform simple daily tasks such as counting money, measuring distances, weighing objects, among other operations.

Importance and Applications in the real world

Operations with natural numbers are present in our daily lives in various ways. When we go to the market to shop, we use addition to sum the values of the products, multiplication to calculate the value of more than one identical product, subtraction to calculate change, and division to split the bill if there is more than one person paying.

In addition, various professionals use these operations daily to perform their functions. Engineers use them to calculate the amount of materials needed for a construction, teachers use them to calculate students' grades, doctors use them to calculate medication dosages, among others.

Therefore, it is extremely important for students to master these operations, as they are the basis for the development of more complex skills and are essential to work in the job market and to perform daily activities.

Activity Title: 'Supermarket Operations'

Project Objective

This project aims to develop in students a deeper understanding of how operations with natural numbers work and are applied in real-life situations, as well as to work on planning, teamwork, and communication skills.

Detailed Project Description

For the 'Supermarket Operations' project, students will create a 'classroom supermarket', where products will be represented by cards with attached prices. Each group will be responsible for creating the price list of the products, calculating the total value of a shopping list, calculating change, and dividing the bill among a number of people.

Required Materials

  1. Cardboard or cardstock
  2. Colored markers
  3. Calculator
  4. Scissors
  5. Ruler

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Each group receives materials to make product cards (cardboard/cardstock, markers, scissors).
  3. Students must create at least 20 'products', writing the name and price on each card.
  4. Next, each group must create a shopping list with at least 10 items. They should include more than one item of the same product on the list.
  5. The groups must calculate the total value of the shopping list using addition and multiplication operations. They must show in detail how they arrived at the result.
  6. Next, they must simulate a situation where they receive an amount X of money and need to calculate the change using the subtraction operation.
  7. Finally, they must divide the total bill among a number Y of people using the division operation.
  8. Throughout the process, each group must keep a detailed record of all operations performed, including the reasoning used.
  9. After completing the activities, each group must write a report containing the four main topics: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used. In this report, they will explain in detail all stages of the project and discuss the results obtained.

Project Deliverables

Students must deliver the following artifacts:

  1. The created product cards.
  2. Detailed records of all operations performed.
  3. Final project report in the form of a written document containing:
    • Introduction: Contextualization of the theme and project objective.
    • Development: Detailed explanation of the activities carried out, methodology used, and discussion of the results obtained.
    • Conclusion: Final reflections on the learnings obtained and conclusions about the project.
    • Bibliography: Indication of the sources used to work on the project.

Note that the document's writing must be clear and objective, making connections with the mathematical operations addressed in the project and experiences lived during the practical activity. This is an opportunity for students to express their understanding of the topic and demonstrate how they applied the acquired knowledge in a practical situation.
