Context

The 'Unequal Division' is a key concept in mathematics that refers to the division of a quantity into two unequal parts. Unequal division is a simple concept with profound implications. This relationship can be expressed in various ways - as a ratio, as a fraction, as a percentage - and each of these ways of expressing the relationship has its own implications and distinct uses.

Mathematics is a universally applicable language. For example, unequal division is the basis for dividing properties in legal processes, or dividing profits in a company. It is a key concept in economics, such as income distribution and budgeting. And we all use unequal division in our daily lives, when we divide a pizza, split expenses on a trip, or determine how much of our salary we want to save versus spend.

All of these are practical applications of the concept of unequal division. They show that mathematics is not just an abstract academic discipline, but a practical tool we use to navigate our world.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: 'The Division of the Treasure'

Project Objective

This project aims to help students understand and apply the concept of unequal division through a thematic scenario of a 'treasure hunt.' Additionally, it also aims to promote teamwork, collaboration, communication, and time management.

Project Description

In this activity, students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group will represent a team of adventurers who have found an ancient treasure that now needs to be divided among them. However, the treasure needs to be divided unequally, according to certain rules that they must discover and apply.

The activity will be carried out in three phases:

  1. Research Phase: Students should research and study the concept of unequal division, including its practical and theoretical applications.

  2. Application Phase: Students will apply what they have learned to solve the task of dividing the treasure. They will need to develop a detailed plan of how to do this and justify their decisions.

  3. Presentation Phase: The groups will present their plans and justifications in a presentation to the whole class, which will be followed by a question and answer session.

Required Materials

  • Internet access for research.
  • Paper and pencil for calculations and sketches.
  • Various items to represent the 'treasure' (e.g., chocolate coins, colored stones, etc.) that can be divided among the students.

Step by Step

  1. Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 members.

  2. Each group receives a predetermined amount of 'treasure' (e.g., 100 chocolate coins).

  3. Students are instructed to research about unequal division and initially spend an hour studying the concept.

  4. Based on what they have learned, the groups must develop a plan on how to divide the treasure among them unequally.

  5. The plan should include: a detailed description of how the treasure will be divided; justifications for the chosen division; calculations demonstrating the correctness of the division.

  6. After developing the plans, each group will make a presentation to the class, explaining and defending their approach to the unequal division of the treasure.

  7. After all presentations, there will be a question and answer session where groups can question the decisions of other groups and answer questions about their own plans.

Project Deliverables

In addition to the presentation, each group must write a report containing the following topics:

  1. Introduction: Should contain a discussion on the concept of unequal division, its importance, and practical applicability. It should also provide a brief explanation of the given task (dividing the treasure) and the group's objectives.

  2. Development: Should detail the plan that the group developed to divide the treasure, with calculations proving the correctness of the division. It should also discuss the methodology used by the group to reach this plan and what challenges were encountered during the process.

  3. Conclusion: Should summarize the main lessons learned during the project, discussing how the concept of unequal division was applied and what the group learned from the experience.

  4. Bibliography: Should list the resources (books, websites, videos, etc.) that the group used to research and learn about unequal division.

The report must be submitted by the end of the following week after the presentations.
