Contextualization

Mathematics is a universal language that allows us to describe the universe in a precise and objective way. One of its most essential and fundamental parts is geometry, which studies shapes, sizes, spaces, and the relationships between them. In geometry, we have a particularly important concept: the Cartesian Plane.

The Cartesian plane, named in honor of the famous mathematician René Descartes, is a visual tool to aid in the understanding of numerical and geometric concepts. It consists of two perpendicular axes that intersect at a point called the origin. In the Cartesian plane, each point on the plane is identified by an ordered pair of numbers, which refers to the x and y coordinates of that point on the plane.

This project will focus on the 1st quadrant of the Cartesian plane, the part of the plane where both the x-coordinate and the y-coordinate are positive. The concepts of the Cartesian plane and ordered pairs are fundamental to many fields of mathematics and are frequently applied in physics, engineering, economics, computer programming, among others.

Importance of the Cartesian Plane

Understanding the Cartesian plane and ordered pairs is essential for many areas of life, not only in mathematics or science. For example, the GPS coordinates we use for navigation are essentially ordered pairs that locate us on a map. Similarly, the graphs we use to represent data and trends in economics, finance, statistics, and science are generally presented on a Cartesian plane.

Furthermore, learning about the Cartesian plane and ordered pairs also helps develop skills in abstract thinking, logic, problem-solving, and spatial reasoning. These are extremely valuable skills that can be applied in many contexts beyond mathematics.

Practical Activity - 'The Journey in the Land of Points'

Project Objective

The main objective of this project is to allow students to understand, in a practical way, the application of the Cartesian plane (focusing on the 1st quadrant) and the configuration of points through ordered pairs. Additionally, it aims to develop teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and creative thinking skills.

Detailed Project Description

In this project, students will be invited to develop a board game called 'The Journey in the Land of Points'. This game consists of a path traveled by pawns (representing each team) on the board, which will be a Cartesian plane of the 1st quadrant. The challenges and advancements in the game will be defined by the coordinates of the ordered pairs.

This project should be carried out by groups of 3 to 5 students, and its execution, including the project's conception, the creation of the board, the game rules, and the final report, should take approximately 15 hours.

Required Materials

  • Cardboard or large sheet of paper for the construction of the board;
  • Colored pens, colored pencils, or paints;
  • Pawns or small objects to be used as team representatives in the game;
  • Dice (optional);
  • Books or online sources for theoretical research.

Step by Step

  1. Research: Initially, the group should research the Cartesian plane, ordered pairs, and their real-life applications. Research can be done through books, online sites, or videos.
  2. Board Creation: Next, students should create the game board, representing a Cartesian plane of the 1st quadrant. The board should be colorful and visually appealing.
  3. Game Rules: After that, students should create the game rules, considering how the use of ordered pairs can influence the course of the game. Each event or challenge in the game should be linked to a specific point on the board, identified by an ordered pair.
  4. Game Testing: After creating the game, students should test it by playing. They should observe if the game works well and if all the concepts of the Cartesian plane and ordered pairs are adequately addressed.
  5. Improvement: Based on the test, students can improve the game rules, add challenges, or adapt the board as necessary.
  6. Written Document: Finally, students should write the document titled 'Report of the Journey in the Land of Points', where they should explain the theoretical research conducted, the game creation process, the defined rules, the test results, and the lessons learned during the project.

Within the report, the 'Development' section should include the theoretical research conducted by the students, a detailed description of the game creation process, the game rules, the test results, and the methodology used. In the 'Conclusion', students should address the main lessons learned during the project, the challenges encountered and how they were overcome, as well as the relevance of the Cartesian plane and ordered pairs both in the context of the game and in real life. The 'Bibliography' should contain all the references of the materials used, whether books, websites, videos, or others.
