Introduction

In this project, we will explore one of the most fundamental topics in mathematics: variables. Variables are an integral part of mathematics and are used to represent unknown numbers in equations, formulas, and functions. In its simplest sense, a variable is a number whose value we do not know yet, but we can discover through problem-solving.

By learning about variables, you will be taking a big step in understanding more complex concepts and practices of mathematics, such as solving equations, financial mathematics, among others. Variables are the basis for understanding how mathematics works in a broader sense, allowing us to go beyond basic operations.

This concept is essential not only in mathematics but also in other disciplines that you will learn throughout your school life, such as physics, chemistry, and even in computer science!

Contextualization

Have you ever stopped to think how difficult it would be to try to solve a problem if you didn't have the exact number you need? This is what variables help us do. They are used to represent these unknown numbers and allow us to solve them through equations.

For example, let's think about an everyday situation: imagine you are saving money to buy an item that costs an amount X of money. You know how much money you have saved and how much you still need to save, but you don't know the exact value of X - the price of the item. In this case, X would be your variable!

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Treasure Hunt of Variables"

Project Objective

In this activity, students will learn in a practical and fun way the concepts of variables and their applications in problem-solving. The goal is that, through a game, students can understand how to deal with variables in everyday situations and how to solve problems involving their use.

Detailed Project Description

The project will consist of carrying out a "Treasure Hunt" where the clues will be mathematical problems involving variables. The equations will hide coordinates of locations within the school space where the next challenges (clues) will be. The activity will be themed as a pirate adventure, where students, divided into groups, will be the "crew members" in search of a hidden treasure.

Students will start by receiving a list of problems to solve, each of them resulting in a clue. The clues will lead to different locations where they will find more problems to solve. The group that solves all the clues first and finds the "treasure" will be the winner.

Required Materials

  1. Notebook and pen for note-taking and problem-solving.
  2. Printed mathematical problems containing variables.
  3. Map of the school space.
  4. Symbolic prize for the "treasure".

Detailed Step-by-Step for the Activity

  1. Divide into groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Each group receives an initial set of problems containing variables to solve. These problems contain the clues to the next location. Each solved problem will lead to a specific location in the school.
  3. The groups should move to the location indicated by the clue, where they will find the next set of problems.
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until finding the "treasure" - the last problem will lead to the location where the "treasure" is hidden.
  5. The first group to find the "treasure" is the winner.
  6. At the end of the activity, each group should prepare a report explaining the strategies used, the problems encountered along the way, the solutions presented, and the conclusions drawn during the project.

Project Delivery

  1. Introduction: Explain the importance of the concepts of variables and how they apply to real-life situations, as seen in the activity. The goal of this section is to contextualize the project theme and its relevance.

  2. Development: Describe the methodology used to solve the problems. Here, the student should explain the activity in detail, how the problems were solved, what strategies were employed by the teams, and how they dealt with the difficulties encountered. Explicitly indicate the theory of variables investigated during the activity. Finally, present and discuss the results obtained.

  3. Conclusion: Conclude the work by revisiting the main points of the activity. Highlight what was learned and the conclusions drawn about the activity.

  4. Bibliography: Reference the sources used for the project development, including books, websites, videos, etc.

This written report will be an important part of the activity and must be delivered one month after the project start date. Remember that collaboration, time management, and effective communication will be fundamental skills for the successful completion of this activity.
