Triangles and Their Classifications

Background

Triangles are three-sided polygons that have a number of unique properties and characteristics. They are one of the first concepts that students learn in mathematics, but they are used in complex areas such as plane geometry and trigonometry. In addition, in art and architecture, triangles are important tools for creating visual perceptions of perspective and depth.

Triangles are classified in two main ways: by the length of their sides and by the measure of their angles. By their sides, we have equilateral triangles (all sides equal), isosceles triangles (two sides equal), and scalene triangles (all sides different). By their angles, triangles can be acute (all angles less than 90º), right (one angle of 90º), and obtuse (one angle greater than 90º).

Triangles are not only important in mathematical theory, but they are also widely applied in our daily lives. They are used in areas ranging from civil engineering, where they help ensure the stability of structures, to navigation, where they are the basis for the trigonometry used to navigate the globe.

They can be found in nature, in the conformation of some plants and animals; in works of art, where they can give the impression of perspective and depth; and even in traffic signs. Thus, understanding triangles is something that not only helps to understand deeper mathematical concepts, but also the world around us.

Project Aim

To deepen students' knowledge of triangles and their characteristics by identifying and classifying triangles in everyday life, while also developing teamwork, communication, and time management skills.

Detailed Project Description

Students, in groups of 3 to 5, should go on a "triangle scavenger hunt", where they search for triangles in their surroundings. Each group should find at least one example of each type of triangle (equilateral, isosceles, scalene, acute, right, and obtuse). For each triangle found, students should take a picture and write a short description explaining why that object is an example of the type of triangle they claim.

Required Materials

A camera (can be a cell phone camera) Paper and pen/pencil for taking notes A computer with internet access for research (optional)

  1. The student groups should first discuss and review the characteristics of each type of triangle.

  2. They should then go on their "triangle scavenger hunt", identifying and photographing at least one example of each type of triangle.

  3. For each triangle photographed, students should write a brief description explaining why that object is an example of the type of triangle they claim.

  4. Finally, students should compile their photos and descriptions into a report.
