The use of variables is a powerful tool in the real world. In business, they are used to measure and predict trends, optimize operations, and make informed decisions. In engineering, variables help model complex systems, from traffic flow in a city to the behavior of a bridge under different load conditions.

Project Objective

Detailed Project Description

In this project, you will simulate all the stages of a trip to Mars. You will calculate the amount of fuel needed, food, travel time, and other factors, using the concept of variables.

  • Notebook and pens for note-taking and calculations
  • Internet access to research information
  • Google Sheets or similar software to create tables and graphs

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Preliminary Research: Research information about space missions to Mars, such as the average duration of the trip, the amount of fuel needed, the amount of food needed per astronaut per day, etc. Each piece of information will be a variable in the project.

  2. Mathematical Modeling: Using the collected information, create a mathematical model that includes all relevant variables. For example, the travel time (T) can be a function of the spacecraft's speed (V) and the distance to Mars (D). Another example, the total amount of food needed (C) can be a function of the number of astronauts (A) and the duration of the trip (T).

  3. Scenario Analysis: Perform scenario analyses by changing the values of the variables. For example, what would happen if the spacecraft's speed increased? Or if the number of astronauts on board changed?

  4. Documentation: Record all your findings, calculations, and analyses in a project report. Remember to include an introduction that contextualizes the project, development that explains in detail what was done, conclusions that summarize the learnings, and the bibliography used in the project.

Project Deliverables

  1. Written Report: A complete project report must be submitted. This document should follow the suggested format: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography. In the introduction, contextualize the trip to Mars and explain the relevance of using variables. In the development, present the mathematical model and the analysis of scenarios. In the conclusions, discuss the results and what you have learned.
