Track and Field: Introduction

Contextualization

Athletics is a sport activity with a history that dates back to the first Olympic Games in Ancient Greece. It encompasses various modalities such as running, jumping, throwing and putting, and is considered the base sport for all others, as it is the most natural practice for humans: running, jumping and throwing.

Each athletics modality has its own specific rules and techniques, in addition to requiring varied physical skills. The diversity of athletics makes it an incredibly rich and comprehensive means for physical education at school, as it offers opportunities for physical development, learning discipline and concentration, a healthy competitive spirit and training to deal with victories and defeats.

Athletics plays an essential role not only in the sports world, but also in society in general. As a globally practiced sport, it unites people from different cultures and backgrounds, promoting mutual understanding and respect. In addition, athletics has a significant impact on physical and mental health. Regular physical activity contributes to disease prevention and promotes a better quality of life.

In the professional world, athletics is a space where prestige and success can be achieved. Many Olympic athletes have faced significant challenges and adversity and used sport as a way to overcome them and achieve their dreams. These stories of overcoming can be inspiring and motivating, highlighting the importance of effort, perseverance and teamwork.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Athletics in Practice: Learning and Experiencing the Sport"

Project Objective

Provide students with an in-depth understanding of athletics through theoretical and practical study of the modalities of this sport, such as: running, jumping and throwing. In addition, students will study the impacts of these activities on the human body and learn about the rules of these modalities.

Detailed Project Description

The project will be carried out in groups of 3 to 5 students and will have two phases: Theoretical and Practical.

Theoretical Phase

The groups should research and study the following characteristics of athletics:

  1. History and evolution of athletics.
  2. Main rules and techniques of the chosen modalities (running, jumping and throwing).
  3. Impact of athletics activities on the human body, both in the short and long term.
  4. Relationship between athletics and health, including the benefits of regular physical activity.

Practical Phase

The groups will choose two athletics modalities to practice. They should organize the day, time and place for the practices, following all safety rules and using the appropriate equipment. This phase will include training and a friendly competition between teams.

Necessary Materials

  1. Athletics equipment according to the chosen modality: shoes, hurdles, darts, etc.
  2. Safety equipment: helmets, knee pads, jumping mats, etc.
  3. Stopwatch to record the time of activities.
  4. Camera or cell phone to record activities.

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Formation of groups and definition of the modalities to be studied and practiced.
  2. Research and study on the history, rules, techniques and impacts of athletics on the human body. This phase should include the preparation of summaries and study sheets.
  3. Organization of training sessions: definition of place, date, time and responsible for each necessary equipment.
  4. Training of the chosen modalities, with the application of the techniques learned and respecting the rules.
  5. Friendly competition between the groups to apply the learning in practice.
  6. Preparation of the final project report, including: Introduction, Development, Conclusions and Bibliography used.

Project Deliverables

Students must deliver:

  1. Study sheets and summaries prepared during the theoretical phase.
  2. Video recording of training sessions and competition.
  3. Final project report, which must contain:
    • Introduction: present athletics, its relevance in the real world and the objective of the project.
    • Development: explain the theory studied, detailed description of the practical activities carried out, explanation of the methods used to study and practice, and presentation and discussion of the results obtained.
    • Conclusion: recapitulation of the main points, discussion on what was learned and the conclusions about the project.
    • Bibliography: all sources of information used in the project must be properly cited.

The project should last more than 12 hours per student, including time for research, practice and writing the report. The project should also address more than four key theoretical topics or concepts, and involve at least two disciplines: Physical Education and Science, in the part that studies the impacts of athletics on the human body.

In addition to acquiring technical knowledge about athletics, they will also need to develop socio-emotional skills such as time management, communication, problem solving, creative thinking and proactivity, especially considering that this is a group project.
