Track and Field: Introduction

Contextualization

Athletics is known as the oldest form of sports competition. It is characterized by a series of physical activities divided into three main categories: running, throwing, and jumping. You have probably watched athletics competitions on television, such as the Olympics, and marveled at the speed, strength, and skill of the athletes. But do you know the rules, the techniques, and how athletics can influence your body?

Our project will explore just that. We will delve into the universe of athletics and learn, in practice, how it works and its implications. But, before that, it is important to understand the historical context and the importance of athletics, not only as a sport, but also as a tool for personal and collective development.

Athletics is a sport that, in addition to promoting physical health, is also crucial for the promotion of socio-emotional skills. It is a sport that requires discipline, dedication, effort, perseverance, and teamwork. These are the same values that you need to succeed in school, in your career, and in life. At the same time, athletics helps to develop self-confidence and self-esteem, respect for others, the ability to deal with success and failure, and many other essential elements for healthy and balanced growth.

To help explore this topic, we recommend some reliable sources in Portuguese:

  1. Website of the Brazilian Athletics Confederation
  2. Athletics Magazine
  3. Book "Athletics is Learned in School", by Alcides Scaglia and other authors
  4. Channel "Atletismo Brasil" on YouTube

We encourage everyone to take a look at these sources to familiarize themselves with athletics and prepare for the project.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Exploring Athletics: Running, Throwing, and Jumping"

Project Objective:

The project aims to familiarize students with the main athletics disciplines, their rules and techniques, and the impacts of physical activities on the human body.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members and each group will be responsible for exploring one of the three main athletics disciplines: running, throwing, or jumping.

Students should conduct theoretical research on the functioning, rules, and techniques of the assigned discipline, as well as investigate the impacts of physical activities related to the discipline on the human body.

After the theoretical research, the groups will create and carry out a practical activity involving the discipline explored. For example, a mini running tournament, a throwing training session, or a jumping challenge.

Finally, students will record the results, observations, and lessons learned through the implementation of the practical activity.

Materials Required:

Internet for research, writing material, camera to record the practical activity (can be from a cell phone), appropriate sports equipment to carry out the practical activity (depending on the discipline, it can be a running track, objects to throw, or a mat to jump).

Detailed Step-by-Step Guide to Performing the Activity:

  1. Divide the groups and assign the disciplines to each one;
  2. Research the rules, techniques, and impacts on the human body of the assigned discipline;
  3. Create and plan the practical activity;
  4. Conduct the practical activity;
  5. Record the results, observations, and lessons learned;
  6. Write the project report.

Project Deliverables:

At the end of the project, each group must submit a written report in the following format:

  1. Introduction: Contextualization of athletics and the discipline explored by the group, sports relevance, actual application, and project objective.
  2. Development: Explanation of the theory of the modality, rules and techniques, impact of physical activities on the human body, detailed description of the practical activity carried out, with photographic or video records, methodology used, and presentation and discussion of the results obtained.
  3. Conclusion: Recapitulation of the main points, explanation of the lessons learned, and conclusions about the project.
  4. Bibliography: Indication of the research sources used, such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

The reports will be evaluated based on the completeness and coherence of the information presented, quality of the practical activity carried out, clarity in the presentation of the results, lessons learned, and conclusions, and bibliographic adequacy.
