Contextualization
Jiu-jitsu, also known as the "gentle art", is a Japanese martial art that uses primarily leverage, chokes and pressure techniques to submit an opponent through holds and joint-locks. Its name, which means "soft technique," refers to its principle to use the force and effort of the opponent rather than relying only on brute strength.
It was developed by the samurai as a self-defense when they were disarmed. This technique reached Brazil in 1914, by the fighter and teacher Conde Koma. Carlos Gracie, still young, became his student and after some years of training founded the first Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy.
Jiu-jitsu is a martial art and also a life tool. It teaches respect for the others, it gives discipline, patience, persistence, resilience and self-confidence. It is a practice that involves not only the body but also the mind and the spirit.
Practicing jiu-jitsu regularly improves the physical health in several aspects, such as endurance, flexibility and muscular strength. It also helps reducing stress and improving focus and concentration. It is also a great form of self-defense.
Introduction
In this project, we will dive deeper into the history, philosophy and techniques of Jiu-Jitsu. We will understand how this martial art has evolved throughout time and how it can be applied in different contexts, be it competition, self-defense or as a means of personal development.
We will also explore the elements of jiu-jitsu such as posture, balance, mobility, breathing, techniques of attack and defense, and the graduation system. We will learn how to recognize different moves and blows, and to understand the scoring system of the fights.
This project will have a practical component, where students will have the opportunity to experiment some of the basic techniques of Jiu-Jitsu under the guidance of a qualified teacher, and also a theoretical component, where students will do research and learn more about the theory and philosophy of this martial art.

Practical Activity
Title: Mastering the Gentle Art: A Journey into the World of Jiu-Jitsu
Project Goal:
To explore the art of Jiu-Jitsu by means of a historical research, practice of basic techniques, and a strategic analysis of fights, so as to develop physical, emotional and cognitive skills.
Detailed Description of the Project:
Students, in groups of 3-5, will engage in a journey of learning and practice of the art of jiu-jitsu. They will study the history, the techniques and the philosophy behind this martial art. The project will be developed in three stages:
-
Historical and Theoretical Research: Initially, students will dedicate time to research the history of jiu-jitsu and its fundamental theoretical concepts, using as a basis reliable sources of information.
-
Practice of Basic Techniques: After the theoretical learning, students will learn and practice basic jiu-jitsu techniques under the supervision of a qualified teacher. They will learn about posture, balance, mobility and breathing, and also basic attack and defense techniques.
-
Strategic Analysis: Lastly, the students will watch and analyze professional Jiu-Jitsu fights, attempting to identify the techniques learned in class, strategies used by fighters, and scoring of each blow.
Needed equipment:
- Appropriate space to practice the exercises.
- Research material: internet, books, documentaries.
- Safety gear: kimonos, mats.
- Videos of professional Jiu-Jitsu fights.
Step by step of the project:
-
Form the groups and distribute the tasks. The initial research can be divided among the group members.
-
Research the history of Jiu-jitsu including its origin, its evolution, and its rank system. Seek also to understand the philosophy and the code of conduct that guide this martial practice.
-
Write a text summarizing the collected information in this first research phase.
-
In the practical stage, guided by a jiu-jitsu teacher, learn and practice the basic techniques. Register through writings, and if possible photos or videos this learning experience.
-
After practicing, watch the videos of professional fights and try to analyze the strategies and the techniques used. Annotate your observations to be discussed later in class.
-
With the annotations from the practical experience as well as from the analysis of fights, start writing the final report of the project.
Deliverables and Connection to Activities
The final product of the project will be a written report that will cover all the stages, from theoretical research, to practical experience, and the professional fight analysis.
The report must have:
-
Introduction: Contextualization and goals of the project, a brief description of the activities developed.
-
Development: In this part, students must explain the theory behind Jiu-jitsu, detail the practical activity, present the chosen methodology, and then discuss the results obtained. It should have a subsection for learnt and practiced techniques discussion, a subsection for the analysis of the professional fights, and an account of the learning process and group collaboration.
-
Conclusions: Students must summarize their learning and their conclusions about the project. They must also discuss how theory connected with practice and with the analysis of professional fights, and reflect about the experience of learning and practicing jiu-jitsu.
-
Bibliography: List all the references used for the work.
The project must be delivered in 4 weeks, which will allow for a time for research, practice, observation, discussion and report elaboration.
