Contextualization
Electronic Games and their Evolutions present themselves as a powerful cultural phenomenon full of pedagogical potential. Several scholars point out electronic games as excellent didactic tools, capable of favoring the development of strategic skills, decision-making, and teamwork.
Electronic games have their origins in the 1950s, but it was during the 1970s and 1980s that significant leaps were made in terms of technical and conceptual innovation. Since then, games have evolved not only in terms of graphics and gameplay but also in terms of narrative, inserting increasingly rich and complex elements into their stories. Today, electronic games represent a billion-dollar industry, surpassing even the film industry in terms of revenue.
The importance of electronic games goes beyond entertainment, as they directly influence how we interact with reality, how we relate to each other, and how we learn. They are true cultural objects that reflect and influence our society.
Electronic games have the potential to provide immersive, playful, and interactive experiences, which facilitate the learning process and can make teaching more meaningful. Through them, we can explore new worlds, learn about different cultures, develop skills and competencies, and in the school context, they can be a valuable tool to engage students and stimulate their interest in learning.

Practical Activity
Activity Title: "The Journey of Electronic Games: From Pong to VR"
Project Objective:
This project aims to allow students a practical and theoretical experience regarding the evolution of electronic games, from their origins to the latest technological advances.
Detailed Project Description:
Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people and will be tasked with researching a specific era in the history of electronic games. Each group will be responsible for a specific period, such as: "The Beginning: 1970-1980", "The Era of 8-bits: 1980-1990", "The Rise of 3D: 1990-2000", "The Era of Consoles: 2000-2010", and "The Present and the Future: 2010 onwards".
Students should research the games, consoles, and trends that marked their period, as well as the main technological advancements that occurred at that time. In addition, each group must explore a significant game from their period, play it (if possible), and analyze its characteristics, mechanics, and the player's body relationship in gameplay.
Required Materials:
- Internet access for research
- Access to electronic games from the designated eras, when possible. Many classic games are available for free online.
- Material for the final presentation (can be PowerPoint, posters, videos, etc.)
Detailed Activity Steps:
- Divide students into groups and assign each group a specific period in the history of electronic games.
- Students research the designated period, identifying the main games, consoles, and trends. They should note the source of all information.
- Each group should focus on a specific game from their period, try to play it (if available), and analyze its characteristics and mechanics.
- Students prepare a presentation based on their findings and analysis.
- Groups present their research to the class.
- After the presentations, students will work on their final reports, which must comply with the requested format.
Project Deliverables:
Students must deliver two things at the end of the project:
-
PowerPoint presentation (or similar) on the designated period, highlighting the main games, consoles, trends, and the analysis of the chosen game.
-
A written report with the following structure:
-
Introduction: Students must contextualize the historical period they were assigned. They should emphasize the relevance of this period in the evolution of video games and the purpose of the work.
-
Development: Here, students should detail their research and experience with the chosen game. They should discuss technological changes, game characteristics, and the player's body relationship with gameplay. Additionally, they should document the research methodology used and present the results of their analysis.
-
Conclusion: This is the moment to review the main points of the work, highlight learnings, and conclusions obtained from the project.
-
Bibliography: Students must cite all research sources used, such as books, websites, videos, among others.
