Chemical Transformations

Contextualization

When you bake a cake, mix vinegar with baking soda, or even when lightning strikes, you're witnessing a chemical transformation. But what does that really mean? Chemical transformations, or chemical reactions, are processes where changes in the molecular and structural composition of substances occur, that is, one or more substances are changed into others. This happens through the breaking of chemical bonds in the reactants (the initial substances) and the formation of new chemical bonds to produce the products.

The core concepts to understand these chemical transformations involve the notion of reactants and products, the idea of conservation of mass established by Antoine Lavoisier, which states that "Nothing is created, Nothing is lost, Everything is transformed", and the ability to visually identify some of these transformations through indicators such as color change, gas formation and solid precipitation.

Chemical transformations are incredibly important phenomena and are closely associated with our daily lives. From the preparation of food to the functioning of our bodies and from the working of cars to industries, chemical transformations are all around us, and understanding these processes allows us to manipulate them in a beneficial way.

For example, by understanding the chemical transformation that occurs when baking a cake, we can manipulate the quantities of ingredients to create fluffy or denser cakes. On an industrial scale, understanding chemical transformations allow for the production of new materials and medicines, providing the basis for the technological and scientific development of society.

Activity Title

"Chemical Transformation in the Kitchen: The Science Behind a Cake"

Project Objective

This project aims to explore and understand the chemical transformations that take place when preparing food, specifically during the baking of a cake.

Project Description

Students will work in groups of 3 to 5 people to investigate, document, and present the chemical transformations that occur when ingredients such as flour, sugar, eggs, milk, and yeast turn into a cake. The group should prepare a cake, document the process, and identify the chemical transformations that occur during the preparation and baking of the cake.

Required Materials

  1. Cake ingredients.
  2. Kitchen utensils (mixing bowls, spatula, mixer, baking pan, oven).
  3. Camera or smartphone to document the process.
  4. Computer to write the report.
  5. Access to the internet for additional research.

Project Step by Step

  1. Research and choose a cake recipe to prepare. The recipe must include the following ingredients, at the very least: wheat flour, sugar, eggs, milk, and yeast.
  2. Research about the chemical transformations that occur when preparing a cake. Identify which ingredients are responsible for which changes.
  3. Gather the necessary ingredients and utensils.
  4. Document the cake preparation process with photos or videos. This includes measuring ingredients, the mixing process, how the batter looks before baking, the cake baking in the oven (if possible, without opening the oven), and the final result.
  5. As you prepare the cake, observe the transformations that are taking place. Write down your observations.
  6. When the cake is ready and cold, take a look at the final product. How does it differ from the original ingredients?
  7. Finalize theoretical research, now with a new observational perspective.
  8. Write a comprehensive report about the project, following the detailed guidelines in the "Project Deliverables" section below.

Project Deliverables

Written Document

The project report should be organized with the following topics:

  1. Introduction: Explain chemical transformations, why they are important, and why you chose to study a cake. State the objective of the project.
  2. Development: In this topic, explain the theory of chemical transformations, mention the cake recipe chosen, and present in detail the step by step of the preparation, always aligned with the chemical transformations that happened. Identify the reactants and products and discuss Lavoisier's law. Describe the methodology used to document the process and discuss the results.
  3. Conclusion: Reiterate the project objective, then discuss what was learned and the observations made. Conclude about the experiment and the acquired knowledge.
  4. Bibliography: Include all the research sources used, including the cake recipe used.

The project must be submitted within one month from the project due date. Each member of the group must participate in all steps, learning not only about chemical transformations, but also about teamwork, time management, and problem-solving.
