Types of Mixtures

Contextualization

Life as we know it is based on countless mixtures, they are present everywhere, whether in a simple cup of coffee or in the most complex chemical reactions that occur in our body or in the environment around us. Mixtures are of great importance in our daily lives and are strongly present in Science and Technology.

Mixtures can be classified into two main types: homogeneous mixtures and heterogeneous mixtures. Understanding the difference between these two types is fundamental to the understanding of a large part of Chemistry concepts, one of the foundations of Science studies.

Introduction

A homogeneous mixture is one where the components are distributed uniformly, that is, it is visually difficult to distinguish one component from another. A good example of this is the sugar mixture in water. After dissolving, the sugar is no longer visible to the naked eye, making the mixture homogeneous.

On the other hand, a heterogeneous mixture is one in which the components have distinct characteristics, and it is possible to notice the presence of two or more substances in the mixture. A common example of a heterogeneous mixture is the mixture of water and oil, where we can clearly differentiate both substances.

There is also a subcategory for heterogeneous mixtures, which are suspensions. In them, one of the components, at a certain moment, settles at the bottom of the container, as is the case with the mixture of water and sand.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Mixing and Observing"

Project Objective:

The objective of this project is to provide students with the opportunity to experiment, observe, and classify different types of mixtures (homogeneous, heterogeneous, and suspensions), and better understand the characteristics of each through a playful and practical activity.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. The members of each group will collaborate to create and document three different types of mixtures. Each group must prepare a homogeneous mixture, a heterogeneous mixture, and a suspension, and then report and explain their observations.

Required Materials:

  • Water
  • Salt
  • Oil
  • Sand
  • Transparent cups
  • Spoons
  • Camera to document the process (can be a cell phone camera)

Detailed Step-by-Step:

  1. The first step is to create the homogeneous mixture. Add a tablespoon of salt to a glass of water and stir until the salt is completely dissolved. Observe and document how the salt mixes uniformly in the water, becoming invisible.

  2. Next, create the heterogeneous mixture. Place oil in another glass of water and observe. The oil does not mix with the water, creating two visible layers. Document your observations.

  3. Finally, create a suspension. Add a spoonful of sand to a third glass of water and stir. Wait a moment for the sand to settle at the bottom of the glass. Capture this process with the camera and document your observations.

  4. After completing the practical activities, students should write a report document to record and discuss their observations.

The final product of this project is a well-structured report containing the following elements:

Introduction: Students should introduce the project theme, explaining the importance of mixtures in daily life and science, and listing the project objectives.

Development: In this section, students should explain the concept of homogeneous, heterogeneous, and suspension mixtures, describe their practical activities, the methodology used, and the materials. They should also present and discuss the results obtained, using the captured images to support their observations.

Conclusion: Students should conclude the report by summarizing their main points, reflecting on what they learned throughout the project, and summarizing their conclusions.

Bibliography: Students should list all sources of information they used to support their understanding of the project and that were used in the preparation of their report.

Students will have one week to complete the project, including time for the practical part and the report elaboration. The expectation is that each student dedicates between two and four hours to the project.
